Charles Saatchi, the millionaire ex-husband of celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, took the stand Friday at the trial of two former personal assistants accused of defrauding the couple.

The former assistants, Italian sisters Francesca and Elisabetta Grillo, deny embezzling hundreds of thousands of pounds on company credit cards.

Saatchi described the sisters' roles as housekeeping, organizing the household and helping out with any tasks needed by the family. They were first employed by Lawson and then by his company, he said.

Nigella Lawson's husband announces divorce in newspaper statement

Because he says his wife is no longer speaking to him, multimillionaire Charles Saatchi informed celebrity chef Nigella Lawson in a statement to the Daily Mail that he has begun divorce proceedings.

Tension between the pair hit the tabloids after Saatchi was photographed with his hand around her neck in mid-June. Lawson and her children moved out of their family home and she hasn't spoken to him since.

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson and her children have moved out of their home as her husband denies a report that he attacked her.

In response to a tabloid's photos showing Charles Saatchi reaching his hand across a table and apparently holding her neck, Saatchi told another newspaper Monday that there was no attack.

"About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella's neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasize my point," Saatchi, an art dealer and former advertising mogul, told The Evening Standard.
