I don’t want to freak anyone out before the big game. But there’s a potential situation at hand. I’m referring, of course, to the rumored Velveeta shortage

According to a Kraft spokeswoman, Jody Moore, “Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks ... We expect it to be a short-term issue.”

In the worst case—if there’s already been a run on Velveeta at your store, and you can’t score any on the black market—you might want to make alternate arrangements for your Super Bowl food fest. Here, some good options from exceptional hot dogs to a charity New Mexican Souper Bowl.

For Discerning Sausage Fans
Stellar charcuterie purveyor Olympic Provisions is offering the Game Day Super Pack for $80 (which includes 2-day shipping!). It consists of a pound of bratwurst, a pound of foot-long hickory-and-applewood-smoked frankfurters, a pound of kielbasa, some Navarre (Spanish-style chorizo) and soppressata (spiced Italian salami), not to mention a beer koozie. As an added plus, the Portland, Oregon, sausage experts source all of their meat locally.

For Hosts Who Want the Snack Spread that Will Go Down in History
Edible Stadiums, a San Jose, California, company, creates epic snack trays in the shape of football stadiums. That means 30-plus pounds of snacks, including bean dip with white corn chips, spinach dip, trail mix with M&M’s and mozzarella balls. You can upgrade the basic package to add on items like shrimp ceviche with blue corn chips, goat cheese dip; sausage, pepper and onion skewers, and chocolate-covered “football themed” strawberries. Stadiums start at $125 plus tax and delivery, and can be delivered all over the San Francisco Bay Area.

For Fans More Focused on Dessert than Nachos
The new Hill Country Pie Kitchen is baking 15 varieties of individual mini pie cups. Double cherry (a mix of sweet Bing and sour cherries), the Texas Billionaire (with chocolate, pecans, marshmallows and salted caramel) and the Salted Margarita (a play on Key lime pie with tequila and a salty pretzel crust) are a few of the opportunities here. Hill Country can ship all over the U.S., except Alaska and Hawaii, where residents will have to find other mini pie cup options.

For Philanthropic Fans in the Southwest
What a good way to gear up for the Super Bowl: On Saturday January 25, the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico in Albuquerque hosts its annual Souper Bowl. The soup and dessert sampling event boasts dishes from more than 40 local restaurants and chefs, plus live music. Proceeds from the tickets—$40 for adults, $10 for children—benefit the Albuquerque branch of the Food Bank.

For High-Rolling Steak Enthusiasts
Forty Ate is a pop-up steak house from star restaurateur Danny Meyer at the Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel. From January 27 through Super Bowl Sunday, Forty Ate (named for Super Bowl 48) will serve lunch, dinner and bar snacks. Folks with some cash to drop can buy a VIP table for $50,000, which includes food and drinks (the nonalcoholic kind) and four tickets to the Super Bowl and the NFL Tailgate party; a MetLife Stadium parking pass is in there, too.

I know, I know, that seems crazy, but with average ticket prices at $4k and suites going for $1 million, maybe it’s a bargain. Plus, champions’ rings from the previous 47 Super Bowls and other memorabilia will be on display.

    my guess if you don't live near Edible Stadium you won't get their stuff that looks so DELICIOUS.
    Hill Pie, oh yea, they ship all over the country. I will take orders for the family annual super bowl party to have a few of each.

    For the first time ever I won't watch the Super Bowl as I've lost all interest in football since free-agency, it isn't enjoyable as the players are constantly switching teams and the games are more commercials than playing. Business have just taken the enjoyment out of everything with their greed!!!

    Anyone who recommends that anyone consider Velveeta has NO business writing about food.

    There may be a significant number of people who create that shortage, but the vast majority of people can't stand it – especially those of us Baby Boomers who remember dreading the nights our mothers used Velveeta in dishes conjured up from hell.

    If you're having a Super Bowl Party, serve things EVERYONE can like. Mild Salsa, Cheddar Cheese, Ranch or Sour Cream and Onion based dips, etc.

        I seriously doubt that. Every one I know who is now an adult has no use for Velveeta, unless they are planning a Nat Geo storage bunker for the Zombie Apocolypse, since the stuff will probably never go bad.

      I agree with you on the Velveeta, but mild salsa is boring. Serve mild and spicy, to give people choices. And, I'd have the wings, too. Some mild, some spicy.
