Back in the day, Bill Clinton was the highest-profile devotee of the highest-calorie items on the McDonald's menu.

What a difference a few years - and a quadruple-bypass surgery - can make.

The fast food giant and the former Big Mac fan-in-chief announced they were coming together Thursday to help fight the scourge of obesity.

Instead of just French fries to go with your value meal, McDonald's soon will offer you a choice of a side salad, fruit or vegetable as a substitute.

They also pledged to promote only water, milk and juice as the beverage that comes with a Happy Meal and to use Happy Meal packaging to "generate excitement" for fruits and vegetables.

  1. Thinking things through

Other than the breakfast menu, there has never been anything remotely appetizing (maybe coffee) on the menu for the bulk of the day. Okay, back when the McRib first appeared, I actually liked that. (I do know better now.)

If you are going health-minded alongside your "happy meal" - keep in mind that most juice is just as sugary as soda, and is devoid of the helpful fiber from whole fruit. NO benefits here.

I visit McDonalds about once a year - they have reasonably clean bathrooms. If there's not a long line at the service counter when I get out, I buy a coffee.

McDonalds is the last place Clinton's heart should be visiting.

I eat McDizzle's about once per year. I actually thought about it yesterday. Chicken nuggets, fries, and a soda is all I get off the lunch menu. Breakfast is another story. =D
