Pssst! Got a sec to chat?

We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.
Consider the weekly Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

So, regulars: note a slight change of wording above. Since daily commenting frequency has gone down, we're going to try a little experiment and post a Klatsch on Monday, for use all week. You can always find it from the link in the left rail, or by bookmarking If things start to heat back up over the summer, we'll go daily again.

Personally, we've really enjoyed the flow of conversation this past couple of weeks, because conversations have been able to continue for people who don't visit every day – but it's a work in progress and we're always listening.

And we want to see pictures of your pets. We just do.

I've been good, mom not so much, but she's hanging in there. Insanely busy at work though. I guess the job security aspect should be appreciated though. Was in FL last week with its hideous humidity, and now off to Austin next week with its equally hot and hoomid weather. Fun fun. With any luck there might be a secret Klatsch meeting, wink wink, nod nod.

So, the company has been cutting a lot of jobs, eliminated the annual picnic, and has been pretty stingy on the Christmas party in years late. Concerns over growing costs.

Then I read in the next article about how they posted a $3 billion dollar profit in 2012, the best in 13 years.

I wonder who the winner is in all of this.

KLATCH HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: Trying to solve a food mystery that became the discussion of choice during a "moral building ice cream social" at work. Where did the use of Wet Nuts (or Wet Walnuts) originate as an ice cream topping? Now that you're done laughing and I've opened the flood gates for my kind of humor, please do add to the mix. Growing up in the Midwest I had never heard of them until I moved to the East Coast and then married someone from NYC. Soooo, give me your best thoughts as I can't find anything on the ever-knowing Google.

AleeD's going to have a ball (so to speak) with this one...

      August 14, 2013 at 2:55 pm |
      • Sir Biddle

Trust me, I had a ball with it before the meeting even occurred when this went out in a company email: "...A sundae bar will follow with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, chocolate and caramel syrup, sprinkles, chocolate chips, wet nuts, and whipped cream. Let me know if there other ice cream flavors or toppings you must have."

Anyone serving ice cream without Magic Shell should be summarily shot. No questions asked.

But in most corps today, you do not want to make off-color jokes, lest ye get sent to re-education camp, as a boss of mine learned some years back.

          August 14, 2013 at 3:06 pm |
        • Shirely U. Jest

Hmmm, magic shell on wet nuts. sounds way more effective than baby powder.

          August 15, 2013 at 2:30 pm |
        • AleeD®

Depends on how hard you let the shell get.

          August 15, 2013 at 3:55 pm |
    • AleeD®@Wet Nuts

Sounds like a case of either sloppy seconds or just-showered freshness. However, putting wet nuts on my ice cream doesn't top my list of toppers. I've seen jars of the stuff in the grocery store and it doesn't look very appetizing.

Of course, wet b@lls on my ice cream would become very tiny and in need of copious warming.

      August 14, 2013 at 3:27 pm |
      • Weeds

Oh man oh man, wet nuts on Ben and Jerry's Schweddy Balls ice cream would be perfect.

Wet nuts is an unspoken humid summery induced condition in the southern latitudes of our great country. I surmise wet nuts is a Yankee confection because I cannot imagine a Southern Bell asking for heap of wet nuts on her ice cream.

(AleeD) Wet nuts are made with maple syrup?! They'll never pass these lips.
There was a painfully brief history on Wiki. Turns out if you ask for wet nuts in England, you'll get fresh/green walnuts. Iiiiinteresting.

For those who enjoy them, here's how to make your own nuts wet – barring the obvious hose or nearby swimming pool.
