While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.
Ice is back with a brand new ... food holiday: July 23 is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day!
Vanilla has historically been the favorite ice cream flavor of Americans. Here are some ice cream facts from the International Dairy Foods Association:
- Approximately 1.53 billion gallons of ice cream and related frozen desserts were produced in the U.S. in 2011.
- The U.S. ice cream industry generated total revenues of $10 billion in 2010, with take-home ice cream sales representing the largest section of the market, generating revenues of $6.8 billion or 67.7 percent of the market’s overall value.
- The central region of the U.S. led production of ice cream and related frozen products, producing 726 million gallons in 2011.
- Frozen dairy production follows a clear seasonal pattern. Summer is the unchallenged season for eating ice cream and other related products. Production kicks up in March and April to fill retail and foodservice pipelines in the late spring and early summer. June is the highest production month of the year, but production remains strong through August to satisfy summer demand.
The best part about vanilla ice cream, though, is that it lends itself extremely well to toppings. What’s your favorite way to spruce up the old favorite?

Amaretto over vanilla ice cream. De-licious!
How many know where the word vanilla comes from?
Sharpton, Jackson, and the rest of the 'hood hustlers haven't cried racism? Wow.
Kahlua poured over Breyer's Vanilla Bean is pretty good!
Just another reason for the obesity to get even bigger. They should rename it to National obesity day.
Plain old blah. Vanilla is one of my least favorite flavors, especially French vanilla. This is not counting some of those really bizarre flavors that should not even exist as an ice cream flavor. Black Raspberry is my personal favorite, followed closely by basic chocolate as well as some of it's other various forms.
Dammit! Now I wish there still was a Baskin Robbins around here.
Definitely.not.vanilla. ~_~
How about a DQ butterfinger blizzard-on a hot day it cannot be beat
Also known as National Boring Day
so what is it? National tequila ice cream day?cool
To improvise a special treat, my father coated vanilla ice cream with cheerios and maple syrup. Sounds ghetto possibly, but man, when I want a good vanilla ice cream treat without it being too indulgent or sweet, I will hit this up. It doesn't sound like much, but really, it works
VladT, your ice cream idea sounds great as well! Honey Nut Cheerios would go especially well with vanilla ice cream.
What's delicious on vanilla ice cream is also simple and natural- a drizzle of honey and a sprikle of cinnamon- yum!
My god that sounds so good!
It is! The honey gets a little hard so it adds texture, and cinnamon gives it a kick. Try it!
Oh, that does sound delicious!
a spoon!
