Pssst! Got a sec to chat?

We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Hello, my chums. It's been a long time. I miss you guys.

    How have you all been?

HEY there! How ARE Ya? Long TIME! What's news?

      • Evil Grin

It turns out, trying to take over the world is hard. Who'd have guessed?

In all seriousness, I've had a few health problems that kept me from posting here, but nothing serious.

I have the minions check in every so often to see what everyone is doing. They're sneaky, not supposed to be seen. But you know that extra box of doughnuts that just appears sometimes, or the quiches that no one admits to bringing in? Those are gifts from the minions.

      Welcome back!
How's life in the lair with the minions?

      January 10, 2013 at 12:51 pm |
      • Evil Grin

Going smoothly. They are currently attempting to breed attack tortoises. It's going predictably well, but it keeps them busy.

How's life been for you and the wife?

        January 10, 2013 at 12:56 pm |
        • MicheleG™

Attack Tortoises? That has to be a looooooong range kind of thing only sloooooooooowly achieved............sounds like the "enemy" will have plenty of time to step aside.

Sometimes longer and slower is the more effective solution.

"Built in armor," Minion #2 tells me. And Minion #4 keeps murmuring something about not needing to house the troupes. I'm not sure, but Minion #3 has this look in her eye when she supervises the training, then glances over at the soup pot.

Hi Evil! Great to have your evil presence back (and front)! Are you going to be able to hang around for a while? Very sorry to hear about your health issues. I hope they're history. If you can stay a while, I could use your help with the dungeon redecorating. You should see what Rich & Sir Bid did to it.

      • Evil Grin

Tell me they didn't mix '70s disco with '80s day glow colors again.

        January 10, 2013 at 1:07 pm |
        • AleeD®@Evil Grin

Worse. Pastels. Esp Sir Bid with his newest to Biddle Mansion: Little Biddle 2 – feeling all nesty and stuff.

          January 10, 2013 at 1:28 pm |
        • Evil Grin

Yikes. Dungeons should be far more bleak than that. I'll order the Minions to begin work on a proper torture chamber post-haste.

Although pastels might qualify as torture in some parts of the world.

          January 10, 2013 at 1:31 pm |
        • AleeD®@Evil Grin

Noooo pastels in my dungeon unless my slaves are wearing them. The minions help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Right after I got back from the holidays, I brought in contractors to re-do everything. So they're only just now getting started. Semi-gloss black and wrought iron are replacing the disco ball, boas and baby blue walls. Eesh.

          January 10, 2013 at 1:45 pm |
        • Evil Grin

          Feather boas, or boa constrictors?

          January 10, 2013 at 2:56 pm |
        • AleeD®@Evil Grin

Feathered, definitely. Forgive me for not thinking of that. It's been a while since we talked. ^_^

          January 10, 2013 at 3:02 pm |
        • Evil Grin

Oh too bad. The constrictors would have been a nice touch.

          January 10, 2013 at 3:31 pm |
        • AleeD®@Evil Grin

Oh dear sir! I believe you misunderstand me. I'm getting RID of the feathered type. I would have no qualms about replacing the feathered ones with the constricting variety. No qualms at all.

          January 10, 2013 at 3:46 pm |

Maybe you should teach the minions how to type so you can keep in touch with us. Welcome back my friend....you have been missed.

You're right. I've been woefully neglecting their education.

        How's WD doing?

        January 10, 2013 at 1:33 pm |
        • RichardHead@EG

Sadly, WD passed away last year. She lives in spirit with me tho. Sorry to hear about the health issues–just don't become a Vegan. :))

          January 10, 2013 at 1:38 pm |
        • Evil Grin

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry. She lived a great life, though.

Still no veganism here, don't worry.

Welcome back!! Attack tortoises...hmm, are those like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?? We made Ninjabread Cookie Men at Christmas, and the little ones made a few mutants.. Hope you are feeling better and can join us more.

I think the minions might like this..I was able to score the kit at Big Lots for $5!! WIN

(In case that didn't already come through – commenting glitch on my side...)

Off the top of my head, while I'm supposed to be writing strategy documents:

    * I'm trying to get back into braising in a pressure cooker. I haven't done enough to really have intuition of it yet, but I'm not yet convinced that the extra pressure won't squeeze too much life out of a hunk of meat before the collagen etc. can break down. I believe it can be done, I'm just not sure how.

    * That part above is driven mainly by my current obsession with doing something to pork belly other than making bacon. Scratch that – "in addition to", not "other than". Mmm, bacon.

    * I'm torn. I've made good friends in our local restaurant community, and I want to see more people eating at good restaurants. On the other hand, I believe passionately in cooking at home, and really want to see people get back to knowing how to handle their own food. The end result for me is a lot of moral support and not a lot of dining out.

    * Coffee; I underestimated the importance of a high quality grinder and was taught the error of my ways last fall. Now I'm looking at water quality and how that affects daily brewing.

    * The cookbooks I use the most are the ones that refer to cooking technique rather than recipes. Not that I can't or don't like to follow a recipe, but I've found them much more useful than recipe tomes.

    Something to chew on...

Wahoooo! My husband is up and walking around with a cane. It hurts, and he's still sick from the anesthesia, but he's mobile. Yaaaaaaaaaayyyy!

Glad to hear hubby is well enough to be up and around. Nothing speeds up healing like short walks after surgery.

    • RichardHead

Great news Kitten...as long as it's not a long white cane they gave him. He should be able to get back to doing the household chores in no time. :))
