'These chorizos are huge!' – how Paul Ryan's sausage gets made

Ask, and you shall receive. We implored CNN Political Producer Shawna Shepherd to suss out the secrets of vice presidential candidate and avid hunter Paul Ryan's much-vaunted homemade venison sausage, and goodness, did she deliver.

According to Sunday's pool report, the secret to Ryan's venison sausage is spices from Tenuta's Deli ("A Kenosha Tradition Since 1950!") where he spoke with reporters while purchasing supplies for this year's haul.

Each year, the Wisconsin congressman grinds up deer meat to make brats and Italian sausage and leaves a third variety open as a wild card.

While the campaign currently has Ryan firmly under hoof and he is unable to make his own, he buys links from the deli and deemed Ralph (Tenuta)'s housemade Italian sausage "the best I ever had."

Ryan said he will make time "after the election, Thanksgiving and Christmas," and he'll get his kids involved.

"I've got to take Liza this year," Ryan vowed. His ten-year-old daughter, for whom he recently bought hunting gear, will hunt alongside him for the first time and then three of his children will help him make the sausage.

The congressman is, in particular, a cheerleader for chorizo - a variety of sausage usually made with pork, and often spiced with paprika, chiles and smoke flavors. While he had admittedly not stuffed any of his own for a while, Ryan was impressed by the dimensions of the links on offer at Tenuta's, proclaiming, "These chorizos are huge."

But, down to business. "You skin a deer then you bone it out," Ryan advised, "and then you grind it and you have to add some pork for fat because venison have no fat and then um, you know everyone's different. You get hog casings, and you grind it and put it in a grinder and you put it in the hog casings and mix it with the spices."

And yes, the process is not unfamiliar. Asked the inevitable question about if the gutting and grinding is akin to making laws in Congress, Ryan chuckled, "It's very similar actually. Everybody says that."

I wonder if his daughter even wants to go hunting with him, or if he's just making her do it so he can brag about how much he believes in equality for women.

This election is ridiculous. I don't remember such viceral attitudes ( on both sides ) of one party to another. I consider myself a moderate, and genuinely want to hear more about every candidate. I like how someone even commented that Romney is as bad as Hitler simply for wanting to cut funding to PBS. Good thing both sides don't engage in hyperbole to the extreme.

I want to read this as much as if there was an article about Michelle Obama's homemade low fat something or other. It is interesting, and it humanizes the candidates. Someone even said that is wrong, to "Humanize Romney and Ryan." I guess it is easier to hate someone you never meant based on snippets of Rachel Maddow if you can picture them as soulless entities.

I will get off my high horse now, and await the barrage of insults sure to come for posting that I hate neither candidate, and rather then hold a party affiliate against someone, individualize them to hear what they have to say.

The only response I would openly welcome would be J Dizzle Mchammerpants, as he seems entertaining and somewhat moderate as well.

And, I am now in the mood for some sausage, no matter what its political affiliation

A lot of people hunt, including my husband, son, grandson, daughter and me so why should this make a big impression? I really think it is another political ploy to appeal to those that fear losing their guns and especially The National Rifleman's Assoc. and their members. I am sure Paul Ryan hunts and I wish him a successful hunt this year, but I do not wish him success in becoming our Vice President.

Yes..!! agree..! it is also true that hunters and NRA people will vote for a black candidate that supports the right to bear arms. However, blacks that will vote for Obama won't do the oposite. Sad true on these days.

He doesn't even know how to make sausage. You mix the meat with the spices, then stuff it into the casings. A bit hard to season it when it's already in the casings.

    1. Ryan voted to end funding for Planned Parenthood, which could jeopardize access to cancer screenings, birth control, and other preventive care that nearly three million Americans rely on each year.
    2. He wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending safe and legal abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or when a woman’s life is at risk.
    3. He co-sponsored an extreme and dangerous “personhood” bill which could ban some forms of birth control and fertility treatments.
    4. The Ryan budget plan, his signature piece of legislation, would dismantle Medicaid, jeopardizing basic health care for millions of women and families. For many, this could mean the difference between getting cancer screenings and birth control or going without.

Romney and Ryan would turn back the clock on women’s health and women’s rights.

Also to Joe Manchin Dem senator from WV ads out says he cheap knows how to save money and his wife always has done his hair, does it matter who does his hair I know for a fact it's not his wife, at least when he lived in WV I know who did his hair regularly, Why lie about such things?? You must be 12 and carried away with adult comments. BUT CNN and the other media outlets want a neck and neck race because advertizements are sold far less with a shoo-in. I saw the debates from beginning to end and
both sides presented their views quite well I thought. Certainly it wasn't a Romney ground-shaker as described.

      October 8, 2012 at 10:42 pm |
      • Michael

You must have traveled to Denever to watch this along with Obama because your head is foggy. Everyone knows Mitt wiped the floor with Obama in the debate, even his own team admits as much. It's now a dead head race (based on polls released today but I suppose those are cooked as well according to you). Maybe Obama will come back, maybe Romney will continue his roll. Either way, put down the drugs. They're messing with your brain.

Obama seems to have decieded that he has served long enough to have his pension for life and his Big Bucks for Library. He didn't seem interested in winning any more. maybe he discovered he wasn't prepared for anything except the publicity and the power of being the Prez. Oh yes, dpon't forget all teh vactations for him and family using AF1 and secret service.

It's all about the golf. Never forget the golf. Beyond my differing opinions on policies I have with Obama, I was actually very disgusted with him for being so unprepared. He mailed it in- plain and simple. This wasn't a third grader forgetting he had a math test. It's an interview for the most important job in the world. For hiim to be unprepared or think the whole process is beneath him is utterly shameful and speaks to his character. While I'm sure he works hard day to day, I have to question if he works as hard as he should on other issues if this is how he treats a public debate.

And the mailman is different from Bush, Romney or Ryan? All three came from wealthy families with a lot of support from friends/relatives. Do you honestly think GW would have gotten in to Yale without Daddy's help? Romney gets subsidized by the Federal government. He makes most of his money from investments, which are taxed at a much lower rate. Ryan (for all the talk of him being "self made") was born in to a fairly well off family. Yet people cry like little girls when a regular person person "appears to have" a few perks that they some don't have. I don't mind Postal workers making a decent buck. They go out in weather that keeps me home snuggled under the covers. They do a job that I'd never want to do.

What may be gross is to coverup the numbers and do a "head fake" about taxing the rich (someone other than you) for the favor of your vote. Does telling the truth and having the numbers not count for anything? The problem is that America does not like to hear cold hard facts and face the clear need to cut entitlements. We all want something for nothing and we do not want to hear that it has a price. Sorry Ryan.

You don't find taxing the elite rich a bit more to help with education, reducing the deficit legit. Figures!
With lowering the taxes and removing regulations while cutting everything will only put us back in to a recession and this time we may not climb out. The middle class will be shrunk even more and the poor get even poorer.
The 47% will increase and double. And a new report out shown that Congress got 5% richer while you and I lost three times that much.

Using the phrase "elite rich" shows your disdain for them. If Ryan worked his way to be rich, he should not be looked down upon for his accomplishments. And no, this statement has nothing to do with the tax debates, this is about how everyone has such hatred for people with more money, and they have this silver spoon image of suckling the money from their fathers' teats.

Rather then whine, work harder, and become self-sufficient yourselves. I am a middle class worker, came up with an idea to save my company a lot of money, and they are going to cut me a big check. Hope I don't become part of the "evil 1%."

Now if you "lame-o"s are done waxing political, I will read more about actual food.

"came up with an idea to save my company a lot of money, and they are going to cut me a big check." SURE they are, and then they will patent your idea. Happens a lot, and that's how they get richer.

Yep...those faceless evil millionaires who have no souls.

Give your anti-"earns more money then you" hyperbole somewhere else, or just occupy eatocracy as a whole

Oh my I cannot vision taking my daughter into the woods to hunt. She would be wanting to make a clutch with the skin? After she had to have years of therapy.

In the south we tend to leave the darlings home for the hunt.

I generally despise "who cares" posts on news forums, but who cares?
