Thanks MG, the kitchen is what sold me on this house 12 years ago...I still want granite counters, but I may start with a new tile backsplash as a DIY project, gulp. I think crabcakes win, too hot to even go out to grill!!

It ain't so........let's break it down shall we-–let's say a driving team ( 2 drivers ) pick up a load of onions in Laredo,Tx ( keep in mind that these are grown,picked,packed,stacked and loaded on a trailer in Mexico ),then brought across the border and picked up at a drop yard. The average price for diesel today is $3.90 per gallon. you also have to factor in the cost of keeping the reefer unit at 34 degrees to add humidity and slow the growing process. A NEW truck can average 6.2 to 7.2 miles per gallon on a good day with no head winds and flat level ground. Each driver is allowed to drive for 11 hours per shift while the other sleeps. It is approximately 1998.00 mile from Laredo to Hunts Point, Ny. You must also realize that the onion buyer has already signed a contract quote concerning the cost of the load which is normally the cheapest he can get it. It is then put on a load board for trucking Companies to bid on. It would take a team 2 days of constant driving to get it to NY on time. This is based on 500 + miles per shift. So who makes the money you ask? Not the drivers,but the buyers of the product as they are also paid to have the trailer unloaded in NY, by the trucking Co. Food is a commodity,the fresher the better. Nope, no where close to $.86 on the dollar.

One other factor to consider is........Trucking Companies, like major airlines purchase the diesel fuel for their fleet of trucks on a contract bid at the start of each year. If my math is correct I would say the average price paid per gallon would only be $1.25 or slightly more. Yep, the Buyer can call his price at any time especially with this drought. Get ready for a price hike.

These are "Book miles " or movers miles used by Trucking companies. It is normally from City line to City Line,even though receiver is located on the other side of the city. Then you have to figure in stopping for fuel and driving around looking for a place to park,detours due to construction,etc. In reality, we don't get paid for about 40 miles per trip.
@RH – I understand about the tracking of miles and routs. Eons ago I used to drive school bus (97 passenger Crown diesels, Class B license) and we had similar though lesser requirements. Happy Motoring!

MiL's was a few weeks ago, when hubby was in CA. BiL is next weekend, mine is early Sept. and hubby is 9days later. Chances are we won't see his sisters again until Thanksgiving so getting it all in this weekend!
Running some roleplaying games (Pathfinder) and some baking to send along with friends who are going to GenCon in Indianapolis.
A GF canceled our weekend plans, so I'm going to drag hubby to see Batman instead. That should take up most of the weekend. How's everybody doing? I see from the comments that the modbotz have kept their keyboards sharp today. ;)

Thank you! Got the job!!! I will be a cop again! In my state you can work up to one year from hire date before you go to the academy. So, even with wreck injuries I can still do office work. I've been in law enforcement since I was a jailer at 18 and then an officer at age 21. I took a 3 year break for kids, but missed it too much. Now, just got to get my daughter healthy.

I was known for using the taser the most at my last dept...lol. I am 5'0" and don't take junk (is that a safe word?). I was on their SWAT team too. Hopefully I can move up quickly here. I'm taking EMT classes too. I'll be busy, but love the job!! Can't stand mean and evil people. My last case from 3 years ago goes to trial this month. I have since moved to another state, but plan on testifying anyway, as it was a case of severe child abuse.

Good morning! Raining here in the DMV so holding off on weekend travel plans until tomorrow morning, driving over the bay bridge in the rain is just never a good thing. Anyone have anything exciting going on this weekend?!?!?
Would that be the Chespeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in VA? I used to live in Hampton/Newport News and loved taking that route whenever I came east.
Chesapeake yes but the other end of the Bay...we are going to MD's Eastern Shore so we take the RT-50 Bay Bridge. I've only done a part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel when going to VA Beach and I don't think a drug has been invented to get me to go over that thing in full.
I understand, its not for the weak of heart, 27 miles (or 23, can't recall) of a series of tunnels and bridges with only one rest stop in the middle.

hubby's family has a second home out there and once a year all of us get together for a week (or weekend) of fun. Normally we go for the full week but because of the honeymoon we are short on PTO so weekend only this year.
NICE. Crabs are doing really well this year if that's your thing. Hammer some for me.
while the hubby does enjoy a good softshell crab sandwich I keep Kosher so he'll have to crack some for both of us :-)
