While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. A childhood favorite so special, it needs a spoon and a straw for consumption - August 6 is National Root Beer Float Day! The float itself has a couple of potential beginnings. Some say it started in 1874 in Philadelphia when Robert McCay Green used ice cream in his sodas because he’d ran out of cream. Others say he was trying to one up a soda vendor next to him. And still others claim a different person altogether invented the foamy beverage. Most people credit Frank. J. Wisner with inventing the root beer float. Staring out his window one night at Cow Mountain in Colorado, he noticed that the snowy peaks on the dark mountains looked like ice cream in a dark soda. The next day he combined root beer and vanilla ice cream, and the brown cow - as the root beer float is also affectionately known as - was born. |

Ah, yes! The true Root-Beer Float :). Brings back long ago memories of sitting at the local soda fountian, dropping a coin in the counter-top "jukebox", moving and groving to the "rock and roll" sounds, and gourging myself on several floats with friends. The Iconic Root-Beer Float. A summer treat, oh! so sweet, that, in my humble opinion – Can't Be Beat. Every "kid", young or old, need to expierence the pure pleasure of a Root-Beer Float. One or two scoops of ice cream in the bottom of a glass, fill with root-beer, stick in a straw, an ice tea spoon (longer handle to reach the bottom of a tall glass, smaller spade to make the ice cream last longer) and indulge yourself in a sweet treat that will last a life time. Don't over-indulge, you might end up making a dentist happy (lol).
I was taught you have to put the Root Beer in first, so that the ice cream will "Float." That being said, I am considered weird because I like to make them with chocolate ice cream, rather then the standard vanilla
