Pssst! Got a sec to chat?

We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Lol! True. I've just spent the day with inlaw family who hates me because my adoptive parents are African American (I'm white). Just gets old hearing bashing. Thankfully, we go home tonight!

Morning all! Hope everyone is doing fine today.

This past weekend was full of homely upkeep:
-My brother and his wife went to Home Depot to buy a bunch of dirt and bricks to put up against the fence so that their dog wouldn't dig under it and into the neighbor's yard.

-We put a new furniture set into my room: New bed, dresser, nightstand and such.

-We also cleaned out my closet of most of the clothes that I don't wear anymore. The rest is going to get sent to Goodwill or something of the sort.

So things are looking up. We just have to go through the rest of the stuff later today...

    Good morning all!

How is everyone doing today, and how was the weekend? Hot week ahead here. Local schools are starting back today. Seems unusually early to me, but on the east coast, school starts after labor day.

    August 6, 2012 at 9:14 am |
    • angrybabykitty

@Truth- Good morning! It's going to be a scorcher today here. Weekend was hetic, but The funeral for husband's grandmother is this afternoon and we will go back home tonight. The local schools start the middle of August here. What time of year do they start summer where you are? They don't even start summer vacation until the second week of June here. Seems to be a short break to me. How was your weekend?

      August 6, 2012 at 9:46 am |
      • Truth™@ABK

Weekend was good. Lots of house chores.

School here gets out right around memorial day. I used to be a teacher, so I understand the need for a shorter break...Kids do forget a lot over the summer, but I cannot imagine that learning will come easily in a hot classroom.

Good morning! Counting down the days until GenCon, a countdown that I believe matches with the one until Queen's birthday. The garden is still doing amazingly well, and the large dose of rain we got last can only help. Hoping that the temperatures will still up so that I can get another round of eggplant end, but I guess we shall see how that goes!

I've not made it to GenCon before, but my best friends will be in the rooms hosting Pathfinder Society games (one as a GM, one as a HQ/assistant).

Good Monday morning! It's already requiring a few cups of coffee to get started. Do me a favor and stop by my blog today and help me answer a question.

Many people think farm signs next to crops mean corporate owned farms – in reality, they signify different plant varieties used. What terms or objects do farmers use that you wish you could better understand? http://wp.me/pTIK1-1qz

Anyone look at this link?? Just curious, but not curious enough to try it at work...

      August 6, 2012 at 11:41 am |
      • Ryan Goodman

It's not spam, I promise. Just a link to my blog post today about road-side farm signs and what they mean. Also asking what things you may have questions about when it comes to farming terms and phrases.

        August 6, 2012 at 11:42 am |
      • ™©JbJiNg!eŚ®™@Ryan

OK, I can't access blogs at work though. I have family up in Moses Lake, WA, so we drive from the airport in Spokane along I-90, lots of farms along the way. I don't see signs too often though, although it would be nice to know what they are growing. Christmas is nice as they decorate the farm equipment with lights and displays. What type of farming terms or phrases are there?? I guess I'm just a city girl.

          August 6, 2012 at 2:03 pm |
        • Ryan Goodman

@JB, my experience is growing up and working on beef cattle farms, but I can get ya in touch with farmers from any type of crop of livestock. I listed a number of them in this post for Eatocracy – http://wp.me/pVCyC-io1

          August 6, 2012 at 2:51 pm |
    • RichardHead@Mr. Ryan Goodman

Good afternoon Sir.....As a Multi-State Driver, I have noticed the signs along the Highways of America. I have also noticed while waiting for 2 or 3 days to load in the Mid-West that "New Signs " have been posted along my re-route concerning GMS or GAS and each of these signs are from Monsanto. My question....Do the Farmers of the field realize that Monsanto has a claim concerning the planted land? These signs appear overnight,so I was just wondering. Thank You.

      August 6, 2012 at 2:23 pm |
      • Ryan Goodman

Thanks for the Q. You'll find signs like those from a number of seed companies. They will designate different plant varieties planted on a farm. With these it's a visual to observe how different varieties are performing in a growing season. The letters may signify an abbreviation for the varieties name. Some farmers choose not to have these signs on their farms. It does not show ownership by the seed company, like Monsanto. There's more links in the blog post I shared at the beginning of this thread.

        August 6, 2012 at 6:08 pm |
        • RichardHead@Mr. Ryan Goodman

Thank You Sir for the prompt answer.......yet it does not answer my question.......I have yet to see a Farmer that has an Independent sign posted in their fields. Unless Heirlooms have been planted and posted in acres of 20 or more,it makes me wonder, who controls this field.? This has been a sticking point with me for quite sometime, as well as I assume with the Smaller Farmer. Thank You.

          August 6, 2012 at 7:21 pm |
        • Ryan Goodman

@Richard, I am not certain what you're asking when you say that "Monsanto has a claim concerning the planted land." I won't get into a debate about a specific company's practices.

I have turned to a few farming friends and they are getting me more information about the use and meaning of the signs. If that's what you're looking for, I will do my best to get links back to you.

          August 6, 2012 at 7:26 pm |
        • RichardHead@Mr. Ryan Goodman

Thank You Sir....It is not my intention to question the Landowners use of the Farm Land....I think you can see where I'm coming from. I Support our Farmers in the Best Way Possible.....buying at Local Farmers Markets and talking to the Local Farmer. I am lucky to live in a small town outside of a very Large City. I get the Good stuff first. Keep up the Good Work.
