Bill Wisth stands 6 feet 6 inches tall, weighs in at 350 pounds, and darn it, he'd like some more fried fish. WTMJ reports that his usual supply line was recently cut off when the managers of Chuck's Place restaurant in Thiensville, Wisconsin felt he'd enjoyed enough of their advertised all-you-can-eat Friday night fish fry after he availed himself of twelve pieces. Staffers, who had issues with Wisth throughout the years, informed their still-hungry customer that they were running short on the special and sent him on his way. If this sounds like a familiar scenario, it's because The Simpsons already did it. In the show's 1992 episode "New Kid on the Block," Homer Simpson sued fictional seafood restaurant The Frying Dutchman after being ejected from the all-you-can-eat restaurant for consuming "All our shrimp! And two plastic lobsters!" The restaurant eventually offered a settlement to which Homer agreed - eating at a window table while the restaurant owner barks to lookers-on, "Come for the freak; stay for the food." But is it actually freakish to expect a restaurant to make good on their claim? Hungry diners descend upon no-limit establishments devoid of sticker-shock anticipation and ready to fill their bellies. While strategies vary wildly - some skip the lower-margin starches like bread and potatoes and stick solely to the pricier (for the restaurant) proteins, others enjoy the opportunity to pick at this and that and still others take "all-you-can-eat" as a personal challenge - the end goal is the same: satisfaction for their hard-earned cash. So we're asking for your take. Arrrrrrgh, he's more beast than man!
My Mom and I went to the AYCE at Wynn Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. It was incredible. The quality and variety of what was offered was unbelievable! Of course it was like $40- a person, so not cheap. They made money on us because we are both thin and small eaters. But we had a great time there trying to decide what to eat. We really enjoyed ourselves. What I hate is the people that pile their plates, eat only part of it and then go back and get more. It's so wasteful! If you put it on your plate, you should eat it. BTW, my husband wasn't hungry so he went to play blackjack while we had lunch. He won almost $500-!
Maybe Americans could do with a little bit of restraint.............Jesus
I would normally have a problem with a restaurant offering an AYCE deal and then cutting someone off because they felt that the person was eating more than the restaurant thought was reasonable.
HOWEVER...
The customer broke the "contract" for AYCE as soon as he started giving his dining companion any of his food. At that point, I think the restaurant should have given the option of either cutting him off or have his friend pay the AYCE price. The restaurant chose to cut the guy off and did not make him pay so both of them got a free meal (even if it was small). Mr Wisth just shot himself in the foot because he owes this restaurant money for prior meals and good luck trying to find another restaurant that will let you do that.
So American.
They're advertising "all you can eat", and that message is unambiguous.
The fact that he eats more than they want him to is just too bad. Either change it to a clear limit and eliminate the "all you can eat" message, or suck it up and accept that some people will eat more than they'd like.
But to not honor it is blatant fraud.
I just try to sample everything without my total consumption becoming an embarrassment.
About a decade ago, I took a group of foreign exchange college students to a local restaurant nicknamed the 'Golden Trough'. It was a holiday weekend, and we couldn't get reservations anywhere else on short notice.
To the students, it was like dinner and a show. A freak show, to be more precise. There was a mother and daughter team in 'mobility scooters' who's combined weight had to be upwards of 900lbs., a family using trays as plates, a man who took half a baked ham, etc. I have never been more humiliated in front of a group of guests in my life.
Now with a family of my own, we do occaisionally go out to a buffet. It's the only way everyone can get exactly what they want at a restaurant. The memories of my 'Golden Trough' experience still haunt me though...I won't let anyone pile their plate or eat until they get ill.
These type of cases have already been ruled on in courts. Yes, sadly there have been others. All you can eat is deemed as all an average reasonable person can eat at one sitting. The fact that he could eat all that and has this much anger at being cut off shows that his problem is not the resturant.
The restaurant should cut its losses and just ban this one individual from this day forward. It's their private property and as long as they're not discriminating against potential customers on the basis of something like race or ethnicity (or weight), they should have the right to decide who they want as customers. If other plus-size clients are allowed to come in and enjoy the buffet without breaking the bank, then they're not practicing discrimination, they're just singling out one annoying customer.

I think the all-you-can-eat concept is gross. And when Bill ends up with a $1 million+ medical bill for whatever diseases he is bringing on himself through his poor choices, guess who is going to get to pay for that? If you still don't know, go look in a mirror.
I cannot believe this gross tub of lard phoned the police. They have much better things to do than respond to fatty's complaints that their 2nd stomach isn't full. 20 pieces of fish and this guy is still complaining. I sense a few mental disorders.
This is Thiensville, WI. It is one square mile. And no, the police there don't have anything better to do. This guy is off his nut and I think he's proven that multiple times. Did you see him on Jimmy Kimmel last night? Chuck's Place is a great restaurant run by really nice people. They don't deserve to be maligned by this a-hole.
Its Theinsvillie WI, small town in the middle of no where, I am pretty sure that is all the cops had to do that day, that or randomly bust speeders going 3 over.
They don't allow card counters at casino blackjack tables, they shouldn't allow fat gluttons at "all you can eat" tables.
I don't like buffets at all. I feel like it's a trap. If you have the appetite, knock yourself out. My theory is that they're psychological. From personal experience, I always find myself asking for a to-go box for the meal that I've ordered at a dine-in, non-buffet establishment. But when I'm at a buffet, I may go up for seconds, not because I need to, but because I can.

Personally, I look at the "All" of All You Can Eat as variety rather than quantity. I like those places because of the variety. It has taken me years to learn to limit the quantity I eat, but when I go with my family there is something for everyone without having to eat a standard portion. I prefer about 6oz of meat then double helping of veggies and a salad made the WAY I WANT. But all does also mean quantity, so I do expect the price to reflect that.

I weigh over 300lbs myself, and I long ago made it a policy to avoid buffets, period. All-you-can-eat is usually very profitable for a restaurant, but this guy appears to be quite the inconsiderate idiot. They've already bent over backwards for this guy, letting him carry a tab(!), giving him significantly more as they kicked him out, and he wants more?? If I were them, I'd sue him for his tab, and ban him permanently from the restaurant. If he insists of picketing, he should be charged with trespassing. I hope any case he brings against the restaurant is thrown out.
All-you-can-eat implies all you want to eat; unlimited portions! If you advertise all you can eat; then you are obligated to fork over the food, this is a very simple concept!
I think the restaurant should have let the guy eat until closing, then put an end to their promotion. All you can eat is all you can eat, not all you can eat unless we decide you've had enough.
I try to stay away from buffets, which used to be my favorite. I will admit to always visiting my favorite seafood buffet at the beach when vacationing. At $30 a person it's a hefty price but well worth it for all you can eat oysters on the halfshell, softshell crabs, lobster bisque, and crab legs as big as your arm.
Perhaps they should have prepared his food very poorly, so it tastes horrible.
I'm in the process of purchasing a restaurant after having been out of the business for 25+ years. I had forgotten about people like this who simply want to take advantage of a business owner. Restaurants are in business to make money – not to assist someone in eating like a complete pig at the owner's expense. All you can eat specials are intended to draw people in and give them something extra and to balance those that eat more with those that eat less on the bottom line. The result of this person's goofiness could be to force the owner to do away completely with all you can eat specials thus causing a loss to the vast majority of reasonable customers who come for such. And then he'll have to go fend for himself...
I once went to a buffet with a friend for dinner and one Orca-looking guy had two platefuls of food heading to his table. One minute later he was choking on his food and gasping for air. One guy came over and did the Heimlich on him and the food dislodged. No more than a few seconds go by did Orca shovel food down his gullet and went on his merry way. One lesson to learn is to always chew your food.
Well, to be fair, skinny people can choke on food too. He didn't choke because he was fat.
The only problem I have with the AYCE concept is that it turns eating into a competitive sport tempting each person to get all they can for their money. There is something wrong about that...just the way there is something wrong with competitive eating and the man v. food challenges. It has been proven that people will eat what they have been given. if that is more, they will eat more, and less they will eat less. When the food is limitless, many people will eat until the only thing stopping them is a feeling of discomfort...that's pretty nasty if you think about it.
The Restaurant manager should have cut him off long ago since he was a "free loader" and didn't pay his tab. I hate buffets and do not EVER go to them. We go to a local Pizza Place that has a buffet and we order a medium pizza and still have two slices left over to take home for lunch the next day! We eat here because we like their pizza. I get disgusted at the massively overweight people making pigs of themselves at the buffet by going back multiple times for the salad, multiple times for pizza and ...loading up on the desert pizza's to boot!! I feel sorry for their children that are very overweight at such a young age and they are following in their parent's footsteps. I agree that the food is really gross at some of these buffets. Not to mention overcooked and overheated and sometimes not held at the right temperatures for hot foods or cold foods. A recipe for food poisoning! Golden Corral's food is gross, ate there once and never again. We don't ever do buffets unless it is at a wedding and the food is freshly prepared. People show some restraint!! Push away from the table and stop stuffing your face, you'll live longer and still have all your toes and feet when you die!
Exactly. If these parents were taking their kids out and letting them get drunk or high, we would be appalled. But letting them destroy their bodies over time (at our expense) and we are all fine with that. It is truly disgusting.
We go to buffets a lot. It is probably not good to stuff yourself with a lot of food at one time. But it is fresh food, so is good for you, not like fast food.
Just because it came fresh from the fryer doesn't make it healthy! PLEASE, educate yourself a little on nutrition. There are all kinds of websites you can go to to do this. Most supermarkets (outside of super Walmart gross!), have nutritional specialist on staff to assist you and to answer questions. Better yet, save some of that money you spend on these buffets, and go see a nutritionist for a month. Freshly cooked does not mean healthy. When people talk about fresh foods, they are generally referring to fruits and vegetables, not stuff that was recently cooked. A bacon cheeseburger straight off the grill isn't going to be any healthier than one that has been sitting under a heat lamp for 10 minutes. It will probably taste better, but not be any better for you health wise. Eat lean meats, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Drink WATER! Don't like water just by itself, try adding a LITTLE fruit juice to it. Or better yet, a slice of fresh fruit! Stay away from packaged food. It does't matter if the bag says heart healthy, fat free, etc, it's still processed so eat as little of it as possible. There, that's a start. Now do a little research of your own and you should be set! Cooking from home is the best option. That way you know what's going in it.
Rachel, apparently you haven't been to any good buffets. There is an Indian buffet near me that is 80% vegetarian and the food is wonderful. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Don't assume buffet equals fried.
There is also an Indian buffet near me, and they give a full vegetarian option. My husband has a blood disorder and is very limited on the amount of meat he is allowed to eat because of it. That place has been a blessing! The kids can have some chicken, but dad can have a beautiful vegetarian meal.
Buffets are a sanitation hazard. Ever go to one and just watch how unsanitary the way some people handle food is? And the thing is, it just takes one person to contaminate the entire buffet. Do some people-watching and you will never go to one again. And BTW, I'm talking about Golden Corral, Ryan's, etc., not a buffet someone might put out at their wedding or event. Those seem to generally be OK because people are on their best behavior.
Many of you seem to be missing the fact that this restaurant is not a buffet place. They just have an AYCE Friday night fish fry. (like many places in WI)
While I think they need to honor the "all you can eat" advertisement, it looks like this man was breaking the rules by giving food to someone who hadn't paid for a meal. That, and I believe most restaurants reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. Either way Mr. Wisth isn't going to come out of this looking very good.

No, but there is such thing as being a glutton and uncouth. I am sorry for your troubles but really, they have nothing to do with this man's gluttony. He was being a pig, opened himself up to ridicule and is paying the price for it. Because evidently he couldn't pay the price for his tab either. If he can't stand the heat, he should have stayed out of the fire pit.

No one should be allowed to eat 20 pieces of fish. It's simply gluttony. What you eat DOES affect me and everyone else if you are on my group health plan.
Maybe next time you will conduct research on what is the best option of losing weight instead of hurling it up or starving, your parents failed you, just like this fatty's parents failed him.
If a person is such a glutton that others have to cut you off, then perhaps you should get the clue that you have a problem. Maybe that person should take as an impromptu intervention. Honestly, it's pretty simple. If the restaurant advertises all you can eat, then it is false advertising to turn people away who are eating too much. Gluttony and health has nothing to do with the legitimacy of the advertisement.
Agreed. As a former restauranteur who has, on occassion hosted an All You Can Eat event, the majority of customers are gracious, fun and fair. But I've had my share of gluttons and discourteous boors as well. I remember well the group of 8 that came at 6 PM for an all you can eat crab legs special and didn't stop eating until 11PM. However, all my customers loved the fact that I stood by my word even in the face of this obviously over the top group.

Look around at the people at an AYCE restaurant. The majority of them are grossly overweight and their children are the same way. They pile the food on their plates like a pyramid and then load it up again two or three more times! I don't know how people can eat like that. A normal serving is sometimes too much for me. I had to stop going to these places, the clientele was disgusting me.
Private business. We reserve the right to refuse service to any fat bucket head who wants to abuse our policy for his own personal satisfaction.

I have felt that way many times but your word is your word. If it's a problem, put a time limit on the stay. If it's a repeat abuser, you can always have a chat and invite them to go elsewhere in the future. But beware the unintended consequences of advertising "All you can eat . . except for Jimmy Bobby and Sarah Sandbag".
Just the concept of 'all-you-can-eat' is gross piggery: small wonder Europeans laugh at us since we are uptight about sex and over-indulgent with food, super-sizing greasy burgers and fries combos while being shocked over simple sex education and contraception. When did the ugly [inside and out] likes of Rush Limbaugh become the symbol of American values?? Ick.
I enjoy the occasional visit to an AYCE buffet. I'm not paranoid about germs (being old enough to have played in the dirt, etc., and developed an actual immune system) and I enjoy the opportunity to have a little of this and a little of that. Since I'm watching my weight, I go for the vegetables, salad, and so on. It's just nice to be able to have some carrots, some beans, some corn, etc., instead of just cooking up one kind and/or dealing with three kinds of leftovers.
That said, some of the people I see eating there could put anyone off their dinner. You could slice them in half down the middle and get two fat people. They get a salad ... and then dump about a cup of super-high-fat salad dressing on top of it. They waddle back for seconds and thirds and fifteenths. I look at them and think "there but for the grace of sensible eating go I."
This talk about all-you-can-eat is making me hungry. Seriously though, I don't see what so many people have a problem with. I hate to burst the bubble for all of the germaphobes out there, but most of the food in the fanciest of organic/vegan restaurants are exposed to the environments. Just because your soy burger and brussel sprouts aren't handled by anyone from the table behind you, doesn't mean that the chefs behind closed doors didn't accidentally cough into it.
We don't eat "fancy" food to avoid germs, we eat it because we want to taste something other than grease. The "more for your money" attitude about food is disgusting, and if you think that's not a fact, check your stool sometime.
However, if somebody wants to open a feeding trough for the local meat hogs to sweat in, go nuts. Just don't call it a restaurant.
When I go to a buffet I eat 90% vegetarian. Very little grease.
Why would anyone ever want to eat at a all you can eat buffet? Do you not know how bad the food is for you, how many germs are getting into the food, dirty areas around the food, GROSS.
Why does the food have to be bad for you? I like treating myself to a buffet every now and then because I can have little bits of severeal types of vegetables. They often have great salad bars too.
As for the germs...I don't see why it would be that much more germy than a by the plate restaurant. The only people actually touching the food are the cooks and you. All the other patrons touch the spoons/serving utensils like you do...but that's what my immune system is for.

Having been to an all-you-can-eat-lobster restaurant, I will say there is a time and place for all you can eat.
Just once that was worth the caloric excess.
The restaurant should have turned this guy away until he paid his tab. The internet has a loooong memory and this worthless flesh beast will be forever enshrined in the Halls of Googe as the freeloading loser who feels he is entitled to free food. I hope this was worth those last few fish he just had to gobbe down his gaping maw.
All you can eat deals come with a cost other than financial – your health!

There is a family owned Indian restaurant near me that has a daily lunch buffet. 80% of the dishes are vegetarian and the whole thing is simply divine.

I spent years eating that way, and it caught up with me. Now I am slowly buy surely losing the weight and reversing the damage. No More "All You Can Eat" for this former eating machine. Its amazing how good fresh veggies and fruits taste once a person puts down the burgers and fried foods. A little bit of that junk doesn't satisfy, it just makes a person want more. My eyes have been opened, and I've given up on the processed junk that is sold as food. One day at a time, God knows that fast food and All You Can Eat food is like a heroin. The only way to get over it is to leave it behind altogether. Amen.
