Safeway is the latest corporate giant to publicly shun the use of tiny cages that immobilize pregnant sows which have been condemned by animal rights activists.
The grocery giant joins some of the largest companies in the country with its vow to phase out the use of these cages, called sow gestation stalls, to keep pigs confined.
"Gestation stalls have been criticized in recent years due to animal welfare concerns," Safeway said in a statement announcing its plans "to have a gestation stall-free supply chain."

This is appalling. I must agree with Fiona and Richard: treat these animals with at least a modicum of decency, and force the mega-producers to change their inhumane practices NOW, not tomorrow.
Fiona is correct....None of this takes affect until 2017. Smithfield and Tyson foods are the worst offenders with Conagra finishing third. It's an election year....let's make the voters Happy. I call BS on the above Food Producers.
Phase out over how long a period? As long as they are "phasing," sows are still being tortured. And how about "phasing out" farrowing crates as well? And doing away with factory farming? How about allowing pigs to be pigs, making nests in straw, having access to outdoors, having something to DO?
