While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday.

Schmear it on thick - February 9 is National Bagels and Lox Day!

If you love bagels and getting a jump start on your fish serving of the day, nothing quite compares to the charmingly traditional couple that is bagels and lox. These two go together like peas and carrots, just on a whole other level.

In case the word "lox" has you suspecting that some imaginary creature from Dr. Seuss has turned to reality - it does sound an awful lot like Lorax, doesn't it? - let's serve up some clarity. Lox is actually a dry-cured, lightly smoked salmon filet that is traditionally served thinly sliced.

Traditionally, whipped cream cheese, called "schmear" in Yiddish, is slathered on the bagel and then the lox is lovingly layered on top. If that's not jazzy enough for you, add in some chives, dill, paprika, lemon juice or even red onions to the schmear. Really in a hurry? Chop up that lox, mix it in with the schmear and you've got travel-friendly breakfast to go.

If you're out of bagels or just not into bagels and lox, try a smoked salmon sandwich with ginger relish. It will definitely solve that fishy morning craving that just won't go away.

That looks delicious. Twenty minutes to lunch. If there was a good bagel shop nearby, you would have just made my lunch choice for me.
