Pssst! Got a sec to chat?

We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Ok, so good news. My husband starts a new job on Monday, which means he only had to be unemployed for one week. We are very thankful. It was one stressful week to be sure.

Hubs and Thing 2 have arrived back at the castle from their mini-vaca to Canada. Thing 2 is apparently wandering around the house looking for me.

      July 14, 2011 at 4:40 pm |

It does but I've also enjoyed the past few days of being able to move around the house without someone stuck to my leg. He's in that "nobody but Mommy will do" phase.

Got the new tooth put in over lunch. Funny, I don't like it as much as the temporary crown they gave me.

    July 14, 2011 at 2:49 pm |
    • AleeD@Sir Biddle With a New Fang

Then I'm guessing you shouldn't have gone to McDonald's for lunch.

      July 14, 2011 at 2:52 pm |
    • Sir Biddle@AleeD

No McD. Dr. Pepper and a bag of Funyons.

      July 14, 2011 at 2:54 pm |
    • AleeD@Sir Biddle With a New Fang

Sooooo sorry about your lunch. Why don't you like your new fang?

      July 14, 2011 at 3:16 pm |
      • Sir Biddle@AleeD

The front is fine, but there is a little more porcelan in the back that the other one and I keep running my tooth against it. I think it is just a matter getting used to it. Its one of my front teeth, so if anything goes wrong with it while on travel, I'm screwed – and not in a good way.

  13. Mare

Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for Hollandaise Sauce? I haven't found one I really would make again – either too much lemon, or not rich enough... I know it's basically egg yolk, butter, lemon juice, salt/pepper... simple, but how can it be so varied in taste?

    July 14, 2011 at 12:30 pm |
    • JBJingles@Mare

Open 1 pkg of Knorrs Hollandaise Sauce mix, follow directions to add water/butter, simmer, etc. Perfect every time! LOL I've tried making it from scratch and it's tricky as is Bearnaise, so I've given up and always use Knorr...

      July 14, 2011 at 12:39 pm |
      • Mare@JBJ

They still make that? I used to use that, but then couldn't find it anywhere. I'll have to look again.

        July 14, 2011 at 12:55 pm |
    • JainaJade@Mare

      try this:
i modified it for my bearnaise recipe and it works really well :-)

You know what really grinds my gears? People who don’t say ‘thank you’. I work in customer service, so I’m on the phone all day with people, and I communicate a lot through e-mail as well. I swear half the time they don’t say ‘thanks’ for all the help/information you given them over the phone, or if you gather a boat load of stuff to e-mail them, more often than not I don’t even get a quick reply that simply says ‘thanks’. What happened to common courtesy? I thank everyone for everything they do to help me, why can’t other people do the same? Am I too nice, or is everyone else jerks? Grr.

    July 14, 2011 at 12:19 pm |
    • AleeD@Lulu

Without a doubt, everyone else is a jerk. What used to be common courtesy just isn't that common anymore. I'm sorry you're being under-appreciated. There's little that sux more than that. But WE appreciate you!!

      July 14, 2011 at 12:35 pm |
      • Lulu@AleeD

AWW, thank you!! And I appreciate you guys too – it's been a fun week getting to know you better! :D

        July 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm |
    • JBJingles@Lulu

I always say thank you when speaking on the phone, but I hate the obligatory return email that just says "thanks". Unless the email says something else, it's just a waste of I avoid sending thanks email returns...

      July 14, 2011 at 12:41 pm |
    • Mare@Lulu

I always say Thanks, in some form or another. If I forget – rare, but it does happen, I feel horrible, and apologize for not saying Thanks next time I speak to that person.

      July 14, 2011 at 12:57 pm |
    • AleeD@Lulu

About saying "thank you," you reminded me of a friend's per peeve. She hates it when she says "thank you" to someone and they respond with "no problem." Her complaint is, "What ever happened to saying "you're welcome?!"

The first time she told me about this, I chalked it up to "everyone has peeves" and didn't give it much thought. Now, when I say thank you to someone and they say "no problem" I laugh and think of her!

Been there once. It is good, but I seem to remeember portions are a little small. Then again, I say that about most places...

Love the Broker, when I was with Newmont, our corp headquarters was downtown Denver, ate there many a time, great food. And even better cigars, if you are into that.

There has to be something wrong with me. Hubby just told me that I didn't know how to shop at a store anymore. LOL

We need a new alarm clock, and instead of going to Target or somewhere to get one, I order it from Amazon. The thought never crossed my mind to go to a brick and mortar store! LOL

The last thing I bought at a store was shoes – 5 months ago. I got 4 pair, so I wouldn't have to go back. LOL

Not your typical woman shopper here – I HATE going to the mall.

        July 14, 2011 at 11:24 am |
  19. JBJingles

Heidi Ho everyone! Hoping for a calmer day today...but doubt it. These new projects have me swamped and out a key employee for the next 3 days...what was I thinking approving time off! In other breaking news, we are preparing for "Carmageddon"! Starting tomorrow evening the 405 freeway is shutting down in both directions (8 lanes total) for the whole weekend right at the Sepulveda pass which connects us here in the Valley with the rest of the world...

      July 14, 2011 at 11:12 am |
      • JBJingles@RH

Hi my friend! Hubs is good, Odie has been practicing his annoyance factor, he's getting quite good at it. In other news from the casa, some unknown animal came in our yard and mutilated a small animal and left body parts all over the patio, in the spa, etc. Hubs did a fine job cleaning it up, but ewwwww. We think maybe a racoon, so hubs is on the alert with a firearm! :)

  21. AleeD@Sir Bid

Sorry. I missed your question earlier: "Where did you go in Chicago, did you do the tourist route or do you have friends there and did the locals route?"

A tourist route. In the mid-90's, I was sent to Chicago on business for 2-weeks. My sister & her hubby-at-the-time lived in Columbus, OH. She & BIL decided that since I was going to be there over a weekend and he had been to ChiTown several times, he could show us around. Awesome fun! I remember hitting the Shedd Aquarium, the Pier while it was being renovated & Michael Jordan's new (again at the time) Nike store. The best thing he did was to introduce us to Giordano's deep-dish pizza. That is BB's & my favorite pizza now.

I was there one other time with BB and we visited the Field Museum where Sue the dinosaur lives.

Happened to my BIL – he ate poppy seed salad dressing the night before a drug test, and failed. Hasn't had a poppy seed since. :)

I would love some blueberries. A bowl of them on my desk would make quite the treat, today.

Soooooooo true Bro.. I saw where they busted some chick down here yesterday that left her Oxycodone on a night stand and her 2 year old child ate it. They were showing her picture side by side with Casey Anthony and remarking how the two could be sisters.Note to self-Watch out for brunettes.

So those cupcakes tomorrow...does meeting at the Starbucks in Clocktower Shopping Center work for you?

    July 14, 2011 at 9:56 am |
    • The Witty One@JJ

Heck yeah! You want me to bring some money?

      July 14, 2011 at 10:27 am |
      • JainaJade@TWO

Thinking $20 for a dozen if that works for you. If you don't want that many can do a half dozen for $12.50 or could do jumbo cupcakes if you are of the bigger is better persuasion.

        July 14, 2011 at 11:19 am |
      • The Witty One@JJ

Of course! I need a dozen cause if I come back to the office with less than enough for other people, I will probably get shot.

        July 14, 2011 at 11:27 am |
      • JainaJade

understand how that works. so 730 tomorrow at Clocktower for a cupcake hand-off

        July 14, 2011 at 12:45 pm |
      • The Witty One@JJ

        Like 0730? Or 1930?

        July 14, 2011 at 1:07 pm |
      • JainaJade@TWO

0730 (AM) if that's alright, i can do earlier but later than that and the toll road turns into a parking lot from hell

        July 14, 2011 at 1:24 pm |
      • The Witty One@JJ

I could probably do that. I usually don't get up until 7:30 so it may be a shock for me :)

7:30 it is :) I'll be sitting out front in a suit...

i wish i could sleep until 730...but I have my first conference call at 8AM M-Th so that doesn't tend to work. The advantage is that most days I can leave around 4 and miss most of the evening rush hour.

This engineer I'm working with again is such a turd. "Duh-h-h, you can go ahead and straighten out that piece of copper (tubing) and it'll run right over the rest of the stuff that's already there." It doesn't-it runs THRU everything. The guy doesn't even know what's in his own project. Turd.

Oh thank you! I would be "fine" swinging that to "adjust" his cabesa. I'm also thinking about pinging on QOE to recommend a surgeon and gift him with a lobotomy. Not sure which subtlety to go with yet.

Howdy ho. Since we posted the Chumarino Cave link we jumped in 1 day from 357 lookie loos to 415 but no one will leave a comment, like "Hi there! Nice to meet ya!"

There were 2 over the last 24 hours: 1 from the Netherlands and 1 from Austrailia. And then earlier in the week there was 1 from Canada and 1 from Germany. US had 12 visitors.

Did it split along the seam? If so, that's a not so subtle hint that your a$$ is getting big.

        July 14, 2011 at 9:45 am |
      • Sir Biddle@Queen

Not on the seam. I think the fabric got worn in a spot from my wallet and it went from there. I think I'm safe from the BFA syndrome as I have the same disease as my Dad – noassatall.

        July 14, 2011 at 9:52 am |
      • Queen of Everything@Sir B

Ahhh, I see, you have my sympathy. To be fair, split side seams are only part of the test to confirm BFA. You must also have a positive pencil test.

  35. Evil Grim thought of the morning

As hard as it is for me to imagine causing someone's death, I just can't reconcile then dismembering the body.

How is it that ordinary seeming people come to this?

(This is, of course, in response to this article:

The things that go on in peoples' heads may just be beyond understanding.

    July 14, 2011 at 9:35 am |
    • Queen of Everything@EG

To know that someone killed your child is horrific enough but to then find out that they proceeded to dismember his body is incomprehensible. I just can't imagine the level of fear that little boy felt when he realized what a monster that man was. As a parent, I don't know how you recover from something like this. I'd have to be packed off to the loony bin for sure.

      July 14, 2011 at 9:40 am |
      • Evil Grin

I think it's horrible enough without being a parent. I can't imagine that grief.

Howya doing on this Over-the-Hump Thursday? Coffee?

      July 14, 2011 at 8:12 am |
      • AleeD@Sir Biddle

Mrs. Biddle has a point about the Winters there. Last time I was there, it was Feb and cold as a witch's elbow. Doesn't mean I didn't have a fun time exploring the city. Would she mind going there for a vacation? Doesn't DC have it's share of nasty weather?

        July 14, 2011 at 8:42 am |
      • Sir Biddle@AD

Vacation is one thing, but moving there is another story. I have the same thought on NYC – nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there.

Where did you go in Chicago, did you do the tourist route or do you have friends there and did the locals route?

        July 14, 2011 at 8:51 am |
    • Sir Biddle@AleeD

Thought I recognized the MalaDee ginormous point. Thanks for the coffee. Doing good thus far today, it can only go up – getting dressing I noticed a hole in my dress pants this morning, so they went into the garbage and then I broke a shoe string. I'm 0-2. Oh well, I am headed on work travel tomorrow to Chicago so I got that going for me, which is nice.

      July 14, 2011 at 8:15 am |
      • AleeD@Sir Biddle

Maybe I haven't mentioned it before, but pants are an option. When you buy them new, there are actually 3 holes in them. What's one more hole between friends. ;)

I love Chicago! Need someone to carry your bags? I'm sure Evil will let you borrow a minion. HA!

        July 14, 2011 at 8:24 am |
      • Sir Biddle@AD

Valid point on the pant optional thought, I'll keep that in mind if we ever meet.

I'm looking VERY forward to Chicago. I lived there before I moved to DC and still miss it. Great city with something for everyone. My wife grew up in NYC and for whatever reason she thinks Chicago winters are comparable to the arctic, therefore I have no chance of moving back there any time soon.
