Pssst! Got a sec to chat?

We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Good Morning Lil' Buddy and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Kat and SLT. I wonder if they are going to change our diapers now? HA!!

      June 17, 2011 at 7:49 am |
      • Jerv@RicH

Morning RicH. If they change our diapers that is going to require a whole lot of Desitin. There was someone that posted about CA legislating too much and they said something to the affect of "I may as well go ahead and do my grilling naked." I think you need to start a fan club, dude!

        June 17, 2011 at 7:56 am |
      • RichardHead@Jerv

Gee,I don't don't know if I could stand the celebrity status. Burnt weiners and all. Waiting on Truth to get here 'cuz we are gonna hit The Green Lantern early this morning. Plans for the weekend?

        June 17, 2011 at 8:01 am |
      • Jerv@RicH

Green Lantern opens today? If that is the case, I'm gonna try and hit that sucker up Saturday morning. The weekend will entail, boiling lobster to become a real man, eating politically incorrect icecream to piss off liberal stooges and find a bunny humping, tree hugging vegan to put in a slow cooker and feed to the squirrels. How bout you?

        June 17, 2011 at 8:08 am |
      • RichardHead@Jerv

Hmmmmm...sounds like a road trip to VA. is in the making. You may need some help getting that Vegan into the slow cooker. No big plans so far,too damn hot for grilling outside unless I wait until midnite.

        June 17, 2011 at 8:14 am |
      • Jerv@RicH

Yeah the heat is settling in here as well. In to the 90s today and the weekend. Mix in thunder storms and it is your typical humid, skeeter filled summer. Boss is calling, I'll talk wit cha and the Klatscherz later. Happy B day Kat and SLT!

Well that just sucked. I went outside to move my truck from "B.F. Egypt" and my security fob wouldn't let me back in the building. It was supposed to. Fortunately one of our guys lives right across the street and his fob worked.

Now I shoot an email to our Office Control Freak and get that changed. :) Should be fun!

    June 16, 2011 at 6:23 pm |
    • MT Miner

Every office seems to have one of those freaks sadly.

      June 16, 2011 at 6:24 pm |
    • AleeD@MT Miner

I'm lucky, I don't have to deal with her that much. I've learned that if I run everything thru my boss first, she'll deal with him instead of me. ;)

She's trying to take control over something I have control over. I'm VERY lucky my boss is on my side.

Circumvention is always a good tactic with said freaks, most tend to come to a battle of the wits fully unarmed as it is, never ready for the flea flicker.

        June 16, 2011 at 6:33 pm |
      • AleeD@MT Miner

What I get a kick out of is when they try to turn on the charm to try to convince you that "OF COURSE this is the way it should be!" and you shoot 'em down with logic. Kinda like Atlas Shrugged.

        June 16, 2011 at 6:37 pm |

        June 16, 2011 at 7:35 pm |

        June 16, 2011 at 7:39 pm |
      • Michele G

has to do with immersing the engine head in a dye of some sort to make any cracks stand out. not my bag.

        June 16, 2011 at 7:41 pm |
      • Michele G

I'm hoping my little truck is repairable rather than turned into an over large paperweight.

        June 16, 2011 at 7:43 pm |
      • AleeD@Michele G

That sounds similar to diekum. That's used in machining metal parts and when checking fit ups.

Is this your truck that has a blown head gasket?

        June 16, 2011 at 7:46 pm |
      • AleeD@Michele G

Ohthatsux. Sooooo sorry to hear about that. How soon will you know?

        June 16, 2011 at 7:48 pm |

It's at the shop now and will have major surgery all next week. It still ran with a "random misfire" so we think it will live to run another day.

FYI if. other than on a humid morning, you see water drips out of the tail pipe, assume you have a major repair in your future.

        June 16, 2011 at 7:51 pm |
      • Michele G

looked up diekum but google just gave me nonsense about everything EXCEPT machine shop stuff...what is it?

        June 16, 2011 at 7:53 pm |
      • AleeD@Michele G

I'm sorry. I spelled it wrong. It's dykem

        http://www.dymon.com/dymon-product.php?product=1164

There are various colors of it, but blue is what I've seen used the most. Some use it to takes the glare off the metal. If you're trying to take tenths or thousandths off a part, you use this die to make sure you're cutting evenly or to make sure the part isn't warped or twisted as you cut.

There's a similar type of dye used that's used for part fit-ups. This is probably what they'll use on your blown head. If there's any interference between the parts, the dye will rub off or transfer depending on what the fit-up issue is. Then you can see where the hi-spots are and machine them down.

        Does any of this help?

hmm... beer float... it'd have to be vanilla ice cream, and a heavy beer i'd think like guiness... that just might work!

    June 16, 2011 at 5:53 pm |
    • MT Miner

I am in, I will bring the Moose Drool, you bring the vanilla ice cream, Alled, grab some BIG mugs!

      June 16, 2011 at 5:41 pm |
      • MT Miner

If we have until 10, I will have a 6 pack of Moose Drool for each of us :)

        June 16, 2011 at 5:43 pm |
      • AleeD@wends & MTM

Mt, I haven't had the chance to try Moose Drool. Can you liken it's taste to anything else?

Plenty of ice cream and beer going around today. Hmmm. After a couple of brewski's, I could be ready to try a beer float. Have y'all tried that?

        June 16, 2011 at 5:49 pm |
      • MT Miner

I would put the taste somewhere between a Fat Tire and a Guiness. If you want to get technical, here is their description.

That first taste, the best part of a beer after a long day. We want to make that better than ever. So we made Moose Drool. The name sounds a little iffy, but it's really the best Brown Ale you'll ever taste. That's why Moose Drool is far and away the best-selling beer brewed in Montana.

It's chocolate brown in color with a creamy texture. A malty beer with just enough hop presence to keep it from being too sweet. The aroma mostly comes from the malt with a hint of spice added by the hops. Moose Drool is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and whole black malts; and Kent Goldings, Liberty, and WILLAMETTE HOPS. It has an original gravity of 13 degrees Plato, and is 4.2% alcohol by weight, 5.3% by volume.

Government-ish paperwork he has to fill out is due today. Paperwork + time crunch = not happy.

Other than that, he's doing ok...I think.

        June 16, 2011 at 5:48 pm |

      • wendy@qoe&cl

what i want to know is what these guys are thinking... i mean... history speaks for itself. you are GONNA get caught!! apparently they are thinking with their hoo-hoo dilly vs the apparently vacuous container betwixt their ears.

book to read: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand... working on it between chapters of Accounting... SO GOOD!! the movie was great, and the book is EVEN BETTER!! do it do it!! :)

@ Truth – my mom read Atlas Shrugged in four days... and she's NOT a reader!!! hah!

    June 16, 2011 at 3:53 pm |
    • Truth@Wendy

Glad that you both are enjoying Rand. I didn't think that much of the movie version of The Fountainhead, but part one of Atlas was good. Rumor is that the studio is balking at doing the rest of the series though.

      June 16, 2011 at 3:59 pm |
      • wendy

hmmm.... i watched the special features when i watched the movie, and i think it was great that Ayn had the controlling hand in the making of it. i can see as i read where the story variates...but so far the theme is on track. and Gary Cooper?? great actor for Roark... – the movies are never as good as the book though as a rule. :)

*gasp* nooooooo! really?!?! well that would just be the pits.. they can make the frakkin twilight movies but cant do something intellectually stimulating?? i guess that is par for the course for Hollywood though....heaven forbid we get a little education via the big screen. *insert pout here*

We need to rearrange or rename that so it will be a cool acronym. P&APB just doesn't have the punch it could.

  29. Jerv@All

A question of the day (QOD.) If anyone is here this afternoon, what do you really think about putting a live lobster into boiling water? I have admit that it gives me pause.

    June 16, 2011 at 12:50 pm |
    • Queen of Everything@Jerv

I've never had to do and I don't intend to. Not because of any moral or philosophical objection, just because I don't like seafood and if I don't like it then I don't cook it.

      June 16, 2011 at 1:08 pm |
    • MT Miner

I spend the majority of my spare time out in the wilds, the food chain is a wickedly violent process, very few species ever die of old age, they typically are eaten, starve, freeze to death, etc long before they reach old age. That said, the pot isn't a bad way to go comparitivly speaking.

      June 16, 2011 at 1:09 pm |
    • Mildred

I've never done it... I've always left the lobster cooking to a restaurant. And I'm not sure if I could do it unless I needed to.

I have helped with a NE style lobster/clam bake on the shore of a island on the coast of southern Maine. But I wasn't part of the group putting the lobsters onto the pile or covering the pile with the canvas... I was prepping the table after the storm blew through.

      June 16, 2011 at 1:09 pm |
    • AleeD@QOD

You asked if the act itself was disturbing. Not for me. Most shellfish is (are?) cooked live. Could I do it myself? I don't know 'cuz I won't cook seafood at home. Too stinky.

      June 16, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
    • Truth@Jerv@QOD

I've never done it, just because I never really got the taste for lobster. I have killed enough fish and game though that I doubt it would bother me too much.

      June 16, 2011 at 1:35 pm |
    • JBJingles@QOD

I've done it once, kind of wierd but not really. They are typically kind of out of it when you get them home, but one did try to escape in the kitchen...long time ago though, so I think the men did the honors of putting them int he jaccuzi. Anyone see Julie & Julia?? The lobster scene was the best IMHO.

      June 16, 2011 at 1:57 pm |
    • Evil Grin Via Minion

Our Evil One says: "I don't have any qualms about it, myself. Lobsters, shrimp and crabs are basically sea bugs. It's like tossing a spider into a pot and cooking it for dinner.

The fact that they are invertabrates leans towards the assumption that they have few, if any pain receptors. While the acid study is an interesting one, it doesn't conclusively prove that the lobsters can feel and recognize pain. It does prove that they are sensitive to sensation, which is why they will sometimes tense up when placed in the water, and/or move around.

There are ways to kill the poor giant bug just before cooking it, if one is so inclined, so it doesn't really have to be an issue.

Personally, though, I dislike the taste of lobster immensely. So as a general rule, I don't cook it or bother with it. I do not know why I don't like lobster, but I do not."

      June 16, 2011 at 2:18 pm |
      • Evil Grin Via Minion

"More on the pain thing; correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe lobsters, like crabs, can detach claws or feet as needed to escape a predator or if they are stuck. This, again, leans toward a very low pain sensation."

        June 16, 2011 at 2:25 pm |
    • JainaJade@Jerv

I have done it before when I was living on Cape Cod and we just made sure they went in head first so that it was as quick as possible.

Hey man, are you retiring the word of the day? If you are tired of it how about a word of the week (WOW)?

      June 16, 2011 at 12:41 pm |
      • Truth@Jerv

No, I just have been having difficulty in finding any kind of focus lately. I will do one either later or tomorrow. I got way behind at the office when we had to go to NY and I am still trying to get my bearings straight. It's been a challenge, you know?

        June 16, 2011 at 1:14 pm |
      • Jerv@Truth

Yes I do. Wish there was something I could do to help. Hey by the way, when you say you eat three bowls of icecream a night, are we talking like a small scoop in a bowl or is it a full on jam packed heaping whopper of a bowl??

        June 16, 2011 at 1:23 pm |
      • Truth@Jerv

Full on jam packed...Usually three scoops per bowl. Flavors vary, but the current lineup is cake batter, mint chocolate chip, then cookie dough. It is awonder that I don't weigh 300 pounds by now...:)

        June 16, 2011 at 1:33 pm |

Have you tried Haagen-Daas cookie dough? I swear the heavens opened up and the angels began to sing the last time I had it.

    June 16, 2011 at 11:26 am |

I've never had lobster rolls. I had lobster maybe twice my entire life and actually liked it. The only exception to Long John Silvers seafood that I'll eat.

Well, according to those people, the rest of us are all destined to burn in the fiery depths of hell so they don't care much how we get there just as long as we don't take a lobster along for the ride.

    Morning all.

Had to make QOE's bacon burgers last night after reading about them here, most excellent! Only twist on it was I used 50% ground elk, and 50% of cheap fatty ground beef, still have 3 leftover for lunch today :)

It has been a week here, to say the least. Just glad today is my Friday.

Need to take a horse to the vet tomorrow, buy a new tractor, rotate and balance tires on my truck, then have 1600 more feet of fence to build this weekend. That should get my head cleared at least, even if it breaks my back.

    Good morning klatsch!

It seems that there might be more than one reason for the riots in Vancouver. Not only did they lose the Stanley Cup, but they must be REALLY sore to the fact that they lost it to a team from the US! You know what this calls for!

LOL! Pinkies out and crumpettez for dippin'. Wonderful weather here in VA and gonna be a busy day. Reports due by the end of the month. I think I'll get me one of those Chef Boyardee hats for myself. What are you and WD up to?

      June 16, 2011 at 8:05 am |
      • RichardHead@Jerv

Paper work,it's a PITA. WD is on the couch watching t.v. and I'm drinking coffee out of my Mickey Mouse cup. No fancy china for true Texans. Gonna hit 100 with a heat index of 109 today.:(

Holy crap that's fraking hot dude! We might hit 83 here today. Does WD have a matching Mickey water bowl?

She has a Goofy water bowl as that is her nick name. Sometimes she won't come when I call her real name but when I say Goofy she comes a runnin'. Go figure.

Thats too funny dude. The first dog I had as an adult (female jackrussell) was named Mel, but answered to Buddy cuz that's what I always called her. "Hey buddy what ya' doin'?"
