We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee Klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Just a "rudeness of people" bad mood. I seem to have been besieged by thoughtless folks the last few days. It has made a dark cloud appear above me and spit thunder and lightning.

Really it doesn't. I have a surgical cast on, that was when they were changing the dressings and removing the staples last week. It took 6 days to get off the percocet, and after that, almost no pain. But... those dang staples coming out hurt way worse than anything I've dealt with from this surgery so far.

        May 17, 2011 at 2:31 pm |
      • Mare@Tazer

I thought you said yours was out side. To tell you the truth, you won't even see it in a few months – not unless you stand by a mirror. For me at least, the outside healed much better – scar wise – than the inside did.

Just remember to take extra calcium and vit. D to help those screws settle in place well – and not move on you :)

        May 17, 2011 at 2:43 pm |
      • Tazer@Mare

I don't even care if there's a scar, I just want my inside bits to work right :)

That would suck if they moved or the plate detached. Ow?

        May 17, 2011 at 2:44 pm |
      • Mare@Tazer

Trust me – when the hardware moves, it does hurt. I had a subtalar implant shift on me, and they had to remove it. This last surgery, I've had no problems with the hardware moving, but then again it's two 4" screws going through the heel, and not a little bullet like thing.

        May 17, 2011 at 3:01 pm |
      • Tazer@Mare

I'm so glad I didn't have to get the heel screws! Just the pair in the first metatarsal and a plate to cover the osteotomy. :)

        May 17, 2011 at 3:08 pm |
      • Mare@Tazer

Your surgery actually sounds more painful than mine. I just had the subtalar joint scrapped and cleaned out, and fused together – hence the heel screws.

        May 17, 2011 at 3:22 pm |
      • Tazer@Mare

That doesn't sound too bad, I guess! I was surprised to hear that both of my tendons were shredded, though... nothing on the MRI or ultrasound showed damage on that one, but for some reason no one spotted the damage. But I got my wish times two! Double cadaver tendons. I've heard the grafts work better than just repairing the existing damage alone, so I'm glad I got them and I hope they work as well as I heard.

        May 17, 2011 at 3:25 pm |
      • Mare@Tazer

I'd have to agree with that statement. The 1st surgery I had was to shorten the subtalar tendon, and this was done by grafting it onto another tendon, then looping it around and reattaching it to the bone – it failed, and ended up "bunched" up at the bottom of my foot. This too didn't show up on MRI or X-Ray. I'm glad it wasn't cut though, because the next surgery I had to repair the tendon they did cut it, and there was more than enough to use to lengthen my Achilles. Even though it was shredded, it wasn't torn "across the grain" so they were able to salvage it.

They did have donor tendon waiting for me though – just in case I needed it.

        May 17, 2011 at 3:36 pm |
      • Tazer@Mare

That's good yours was salvaged. All that crap you had to go through just sounds horrific! Mine was torn "up" the tendon and they were all stretched out.

      Waffle House?

      May 17, 2011 at 12:31 pm |
    • Evil Grin

Maybe I'll look for a waffle house on a local horse farm.

Sigh I don't think I'll be able to get my steak for lunch. But I can pick some up for dinner.

Morning all, beautiful day in MT.

So your horses have canines? [Love dbl entendres!!]

Butt-seriously folks, don't all the animals we've been commenting on have canines? I thought the canines were teeth in a given position in the mouth. Are they called canines in horses, too?

      May 17, 2011 at 12:27 pm |
      • MT Miner, Horse Whisperer

They are known locally as "wolf teeth", most of us have them pulled early in the foals life. Not really of any value. very similar to elk having "ivories", which at one point in history were actually tusks, looked like a walrus or saber toothed tiger. All part of evolution........ Some on the other post need to evolve into reality.

It's fun to read the other threads when people are poppin' off. I like to figure out who's who. Flippity Flappity, Bill Gates, Mr. Ed, Bob Barker, etc. aka RH and Jerv. Am I correct? HAHAHA

      May 17, 2011 at 12:21 pm |

I was taking full advantage of the nice weather last week. Took off from work for 3 days to do yard work, and get sunburned. :)

How are things in your neck of the woods?

        May 17, 2011 at 12:29 pm |
      • Jerv@Mare

Oh, glad you took advantage of the nice weather. We have some nasty storms moving in today and for the next couple as well. Since we are actually enjoying a spring this year, I'm not complaining. What did you plant, a garden?

        May 17, 2011 at 12:44 pm |
      • Mare@Jerv

It's been a really miserable spring here in WNY – either rain and cold, or sunny and hot. No happy medium.

No, didn't plant anything. I was helping hubby dig up the old lawn, level it out, and reseed. Not to mention landscape. We had 22 tons of stone delivered that we put down last week. We have 2 Deutz-Allis garden tractors, and a "Johnny Bucket" that made fast work of everything. (We have about 3 acres that we are currently working on fixing up)

        May 17, 2011 at 12:54 pm |

I've seen that before and have no clue what it stands for. The horsethread is on fire, I see. It's always horse and vegan threads that tork people off. Have you guys heard from Jdizz or his gf? Ouch!
That one is going to hurt...Perhaps we should leave out a collection jar here in the lounge.

I have a related story of tax weirdness, this one at the state level. Because I bought a hybrid car last year, I got a tax credit from the state of Colorado equal to 10% of the purchase price. After I filed, I got a bill from the state saying that I took a credit of $288 too much, and they wanted taht back. I mailed them a check in February and thought it was done. Lo and behold, this weekend, they mailed me a refund of the same $288. Sheesh guys, make up your minds already.

Good morning chums. I see the fervent... ferver on the horse thread hasn't calmed.

Hey, could you pass me one of those bagels, and some equine jerky? Thanks much.

Man, Orson Wells had to be smashed. Or maybe he had a traumatic brain injury? Because you'd think after all those radio years, and movie years, he'd know how to deliver the line, "Ahh, French Champagne." He scared the pee out of people with War of the Worlds, but he couldn't convince anyone he knew what champagne was? Sad.

Hey, over on the horse thread, someone posted a video of horses being treated/slaughtered inhumanely. Did anyone watch it?

    May 17, 2011 at 9:57 am |
    • AleeD@Jerv

      Nope. Why do you ask?

      May 17, 2011 at 10:10 am |
      • Jerv@AleeD

Because with all the hateful stuff that people were posting, I wasn't sure if I could trust it as a reliable source of information.

        May 17, 2011 at 10:16 am |
      • AleeD Dominatrixing the Thread Again@Jerv

I'm not sure I'd trust anything from a post that is that volatile. Anyone could claim they're trying to make a point by posting a macabre video from some obscure horror flick and claim that, in this case, "horses are really treated this way."

I don't need images like that, true or otherwise, in my cabesa. ;)

        Did you watch it?

        May 17, 2011 at 10:41 am |
      • Jerv@AleeD

No I did not for the precise reason you posted. I would rather talk or correspond with someone that is level headed and can present reliable research and info. I tried to get some of "them" to produce said info but only got ad hominen attacks that Truth pointed out that they are so well known for. Anyway...back to work here.

Good morning all! Woke up during the night to the senstation of being smothered...opened eyes to find my 50lb dog lying on my chest/neck. Normally this one isn't scared of storms but apparently last night was the exception.

    May 17, 2011 at 8:35 am |
    • Jerv@JJ

Morning to ya'. Wow, that would have totally freaked me out. My doggie snored through last nights storm.

      May 17, 2011 at 8:38 am |
      • JainaJade@Jerv

I had orginally tried to get them to stay downstairs since I knew a storm was coming and the little one likes being in her safety spot. However the big one wanted none of that since the rule is when one parent is away dogs gets to stay in the bed. I had expected the little one to do something like that but 25lbs of short hair puppy is totally different than 50lbs of fluffy puppy. Still not sure why she freaked, normally during storms she just chills...

    Good morning all.

I ended up waking in that "it's too early to wake up but too late to go back to sleep" range of time and made ramp compound butter for the con I'm going to Memorial Day weekend.

I also managed to score a big 20+ cup coffee pot and a ceramic tea pot for about $6. Yay Goodwill & Salvation Army!

Now that's a great score, I have to say. How long did it take for you Buzzy pot to start to grow?

Ahhh, evil klatchers to be feeding the trolls. ;)

I'm watering a little bit each day... this is a longer than wide metal tub/pot with no drainage so I don't want to over-water it.

RH, welks for the greenery. Always willing to share a good thing.

Jerv, yep, I'm MalaDee (among other names). A while back, I asked the Klatsch what would be an appropriate "evil" name for me for posting less-than-savory comments. I think it was either Truth or Evil Grin who came up with "MalaDee" as a play on my usual screen name. I'm happy that you find humor in my not-so-nice side. ;))

Just put the coffee on. Nothin' fancy, just some Folgers. It's gonna be a good day, my friend, even with all the rain. You and WD making a run this morning??

      • RichardHead@Jerv

Yes Sir, Just pulled into Mobile AL. and parked on the front row!! With all this flooding it will give a new meaning to the term Roll Tide. Gotta do my mandatory "Break" for awhile and WD needs to water the plants. Thanks for the coffee.

      • Jerv@RicH

Yeah ain't that right. Seems to be raining and flooding all over the darn country. So what are the regs now, is it 8 or 11 hours on and then you have to pull over?

It's all screwed up...Drive for 10 and have to take 8 unless you do this or that. I run 2 books with WD as my second driver just in case.

Sounds completely jacked up now. My pops did the same thing with his books. Gotta do what ya gotta do to make a living.
