As far as I'm concerned... if people are going to complain about wanting the govt to pay for their health care then they have every right to limit all the crap that is making our society obese beyond belief. If you want to drink it, drink it in your own home. This doesn't ban soda altogether. STOP WHINING!

Seriously? When did the Government become my parent? I resent the freedom of personal decision being taken away from me... I don't drink "sugary" drinks, but resent being told what I can and can't do... With all the *serious* problems in the world, how can a government spend time on this nonsense....

Because it's election time for them and they're trying (poorly) to make a name for themselves. What they don't realize is just how stupid they look trying to defend this policy.

      • Pam @goober grape

You would think they would spend time figuring out how to balance the budget.... or maybe Boston doesn't have a deficit or any other problems and all they have to do is trivial nonsense.... In that case, Boston must be *the* city to live in with no problems, taxes being reduced because they have a surplus..... LOL

so... instead of taking down big companies that produce sugar filled products...we bow down to them by "banning" everything related? we are on our way to "1984"

Ridiculous policy. Can I bring my own soda on the property or am I going to be arrested? Sure, take me to court, please.

Good. i hate going to a vending machine and all that's in it is soda. Would rather have nothing than drink that junk. This makes eating/drinking healthy ALSO convenient, which is why most people say they eat junk food.
I think its a nice start to making people realize how much AWFUL 'food' is being sold.

The city is not banning the drinks within city limits, nor is it banning them from being on city property. What it is doing is banning the sale and advertisement of them on city property. That means that concession stands in parks, street vendors outside the courthouse, vending machines in City Hall, etc., won't be selling them to you. They also won't be advertising on those properties. Nobody is saying that you can't drink them. The city is just saying "we won't sell them to you" and it's saying "we won't sell advertising space on our bus stop benches to those drink vendors." Stop overreacting people. If you're getting all worked up about this nonevent, maybe you should think about cutting back on sugar and caffeine. It's making you too excitable.

Wow, this is ridiculous. Banning outright is pretty intense.

I don’t buy the we need to ban it because unhealthy people drive up the healthcare costs for the rest of us argument. I think insurance companies should be able to deny coverage for the treatment of certain diseases that are the result of an unhealthy lifestyle choice. Everyone know that smoking is bad for you, so if you chose to do it then you should assume 100% of the risks involved. If you smoke for 40 years, and then get some kind of cancer requiring tens ( maybe even hundreds) of thousands of dollars worth of treatment and medication, I don’t see why I should have to subsidies that through my insurance premium. If you swill down sugary drinks and junk food all day and get diabetes, then the cost of medications should be 100% on you. But of course we will never do any of that, its all part of this countries ban logic now movement.

Agreed on the cigarettes cause cancer point. However, given that genetics also plays a large part in type II diabetes, I think it would be harder to say if you have diabetes it's because you're a fatty,

      April 8, 2011 at 11:52 am |
      • JBJingles

Let's leave the healthcare issues out of this as it will never work for very good reasons. I could say I don't want to pay increased premiums for people who have unsafe sex, abuse alcohol, eat junk food, smoke, etc. Where does it end and how would you ever regulate that!? Heck, you might as well just ban all unhealthy foods (snack cakes, chips, soda, etc.) from the stores, then put hundreds of thousands of people out of work...that will do a lot of good also. Cigarettes are already taxed to the hilt, where is that money going?

That’s a good point, I would suggest as a solution that insurance could cover diabetes medication for people who are at ( or under ) the appropriate weight for a person of their body type. For example if your 5 foot 10 and your ideal weight should be 185 lbs, and you are 300lbs then I would assume weight would be a contributing factor in your diabetes. Where as if a person is at their ideal weight and still has diabetes, then it can most likely be chalked up to genetics, so basically, if your overweight you pay the cost of the meds, once you slim down insurance can take over at that point. I think the cost factor of paying for 100% of their monthly meds would be a motivating factor for the person to lose weight, which might get rid of their diabetes all together, as well as contribute to an overall healthy lifestyle.

        sman1234,

You are obviously a moron that doesn't have the slightest inkling as to what does, and does not, cause diabetes. Crack a book, fella.

The next step will be cutting down the trees and flowers in the Boston Common to take away a large part of the risk for hay fever.

That's ridiculous. Just another example of self righteous idiots that think it's alright to try and tell everyone else what to do. Mind your own business. Adults can make their own choices, good or bad, it's not yours to make.

Normally I would agree with you except A) Americans make poor choices for their own health and B) these poor choices Americans make are adding to the balooning costs of healthcare that we ALL end up paying for in some form or another.

Like it or not, the unhealthy lifestyle of "Fat Body's" is killing us all financially.

      April 8, 2011 at 10:51 am |
      • Jdizz

Yeah. That's why healthcare is so expensive in the US. Dummy.

There is a reason we have so many foreign doctors in the US. We're the only country that has a "for-profit" health care industry.

I agree this is really dumb, but a Mayor's decision has nothing to do with the lack of budget in Washington... I really don't see where you're going wtih that one.

      April 8, 2011 at 10:52 am |
      • Truth, Temporary Bachelor

Most localities are running deficits as well. Certainly this mayor has bigger things to worry about than this.
