Washington (CNN) - A California company has recalled more than 3,000 pounds of fresh ground beef patties and other packages of ground beef products that may be contaminated with the E. coli bacteria, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Saturday.

The department's Food Safety and Inspection Service said it became aware of the problem "when contacted by another federal regulated establishment who believed they had received suspect product."

American Food Service of Pico Rivera recalled the products, which were produced on January 31, the USDA said in a press release.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number "EST. 1913" inside the USDA mark of inspection. They were sent to restaurants throughout Southern California.

    Watch the documentary "Food Inc." It will make you never want to eat meat again.

    E-coli comes from cattle not being fed properly. Cattle is being fed corn, rather than grazing like they should be. And instead of letting the cattle graze they keep them in pens with hundreds of other cattle, knee deep in crap and piss.

    If one cow has it, they all have it. Then they drain all the e-coli contaminated sludge down stream to infect food crops.

    I guess a great chunk proportion of livestocks-mostly cows and pigs- currently in S.Korea now might have been infected with food and mouth disease, even after infection proven ones' mass burial and containment efforts.. This is so terrible happening here right now, and vaccination came just way too late and after pre vaccination it takes some time for them ot form resistant immune system. And we still don't know till about 4 weeks laters if suspected cows had acctually been infected or not.. thankfully past few days of notorius cold spell that swept thru the deep wounds of them and growers alike seem to be giving way to warmer temps and benign weathers now..that should slow the spread of F&M virus..But a good rain will also help a lot, since ours pretty polluted and acidic relatively speaking~ Anyway i've no problem eating beef and pork tainted with this disesase!! but Department of Agriculture and Fish won't let me..for reason of containment!!

    My question is wether high pressure pasteurization process also eradicate bobanic bacteria-mad cow disease- and other germs than E coli, and if this S.Cal occurrence had its meat patties tainted prior or after the bacteria killing process. It also reminds me the last salmonella and vivrio outbreak from oysters harvested at the gulf of Mexico..or the Fresno/Watsonville grown spinach e coli outbreak in which some of them not only in contaminated water the culprit but also thru mass production/manufacturing process.. Perhaps not with the grinded beef itself but thru production process it might have been polluted with e coli bacteria!

    One of the best ways to reduce chances of tainted hamburger, outside of not eating it, is to never buy ground beef in "tubes" or pre-made patties in boxes. This is the stuff that comes from gigantic factories somewhere, the ones that are the subject of frequent recalls. Always buy the ground beef that is ground and packaged by the supermarket's meat department. It's safer, fresher and better quality. Also, it's a shame that no-nothings refuse to acknowledge the complete safety of food irradiation. And, "you never know" is not a valid response.

      Whenever I see a story like this the first thing that comes to my mind is the radiation that could have prevented all of this in the first place.

        Great thought, but as mentioned below, the new process of high pressure Pasteurization is more effective and no fears of radiation, which is still of some concern. The biggest challenge is despite all manufacture pre cautions, we have no control over how it's handled once it hits the stores etc. Frozen patties are a different story, but at least there are tests to know and ability to recall. HPP would also destroy e-coli in patties. You should google......it's a fascinating process being used by more and more meat companies; in fact, several chains like Costco are moving to make it mandatory on all meat they carry.

      You need to be better educated not spew lines from something you've read or seen in Farm Inc. There are several new processes including High Pressure Pasteurization(HPP) that make the tube ground Beef safer than anything going through the grinder at your local supermarket which is cleaned at most once per day. Secondly, far more cases of food borne illnesses including e-coli come from fruits and vegetables than meat; however, rarely reported. Just doesn't make for big of story or meet certain agendas

      I love steak, ribs, pork, basically anything meatwise. There is to many recalls going on with meat. First Taco Bell now resurants in Cali. Good thing I don't live there! Ha Ha HA Cali meat lovers.
