Pssst! Got a sec to chat?

We are utterly thrilled when readers want to hang out and talk – whether it's amongst themselves or in response to pieces we've posted. We want Eatocracy to be a cozy, spirited online home for those who find their way here.

Consider the daily Coffee klatsch post as your VIP lounge – the primary comments thread for readers who'd like to chat about topics not related to the articles we're running. That way, everyone knows where to find each other, and each post's comments section remains on topic.

Soooo...what's everyone cooking and/or gobbling up this holiday weekend? Do you stick to same menu every year, or go all "variety is the spice of life?"

And more importantly, who won yesterday's limbo contest?

for those of you that grew up with them.... the Smurfs are coming out with a movie. Spiderman reminded me of it as Toby is playing a 'human' in the movie that encounters the little blue guys in central park. what's up with all the 'redos' in movies today?

They've run out of ideas. And I'm getting tired of seeing remakes or movies based off old tv shows myself. I think half the success of Avatar was simply that it wasn't based off an old show or a remake of an old movie.

      December 23, 2010 at 1:47 pm |
      • Yupyupyup

Yup, couldn't agree more. And also, Avatar seemed to me to be a thinly veiled commentary on the Iraq war, although a good flick.

      • Truth@EGrin, Yupyup

I was THIS close to going off about Avatar being a liberal film, but I am trying to refrain from getting overly political...

        December 23, 2010 at 1:00 pm |
      • Jdizzle McHammerpants

Hugh Jackman was actually the backup to the original person cast for X-MEN. The guy didn't show, and they called Hugh in to fill the part. His facial hair in the first movie is fake in parts cause he didn't have time to grow it out before shooting.

        December 23, 2010 at 1:04 pm |

Fear not, when my evil minions have properly taken control of the world, I won't forget my chums. It's just that if you insist on fighting, I may have to literally make you chum. I won't want to, of course, and will do so only with tears in my eyes, but that is the way these things go.

  10. Truth@Biddle

    Ingredients:
16 Tbs. (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room
    temperature
    1⁄4 cup confectioners' sugar
1⁄4 cup granulated sugar, plus 1 Tbs. for
    sprinkling
    2 tsp. vanilla extract
    1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
    1⁄4 tsp. salt
    Directions:
    Preheat an oven to 300°F.

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer fitted with the flat beater, beat the butter on high speed until fluffy and pale yellow. Add the confectioners' sugar and the 1/4 cup granulated sugar and continue beating until the mixture is no longer gritty when rubbed between your thumb and finger. Beat in the vanilla.

Over a sheet of waxed paper, sift together the flour and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix on low speed or stir with a wooden spoon just until blended.

Using floured fingertips, press the dough evenly into an ungreased 9-inch square baking pan. Sprinkle evenly with the 1 Tbs. granulated sugar.

Bake the shortbread until the edges are golden, about 1 hour. Remove the pan from the oven and immediately use a thin, sharp knife to cut the shortbread into strips 3 inches by 1 inch. Use a toothpick or the tines of a fork to decorate the shortbread with a pattern of dots. Let the strips cool in the pan on a wire rack for 30 minutes before transferring them to the rack to cool completely.

      December 23, 2010 at 1:04 pm |
      • Truth@MicheleG

Not sure...Never used Splenda. One of my fav lines in all of cinema: "Sometime, you just have to say "What the $@%#..."

        December 23, 2010 at 1:19 pm |
      • Evil Grin

Michele, you can make a confectioner sugar substitute.

2 cups nonfat dry milk powder
        2 cups cornstarch
        1 cup granulated splenda

Put them all in a blender and blend until they are roughly the consistency of powdered sugar.

        December 23, 2010 at 1:31 pm |
      • MicheleG

        Hey, Thanks! Will try that!

  15. faith@SLT's question above

I'm cooking dinner for approximately 40 people, so I have quite a bit of work to do. I think two meats are in order for a crowd this big. My sister in law, who owns a restaurant, is donating a pork loin that I'm cooking and last night I finally decided I would make short ribs in the slow cooker. Nope, never made them before but the recipe calls for beer, so it sounded like a winner, plus it's in the slow cooker. Also having the usual mashed potatoes and stuffing, lots of vegetable side dishes as well. A few other family members will be bringing a dish too pass. I'm not at all as prepared as I was for Thanksgiving, but am headed to the market this afternoon to finish up shopping. Wish me luck!

      • Truth@Biddle

I used to work with someone who used to pump everyday and leave in the company refrigerator. I LOVE to do impressions, and the movie "Witness" has a scene where an older Amish man wakes up Harrison Ford's character to do some farmwork by saying "It's 4:30, time for milking"...I used to use that line at the office, and it always got laughs...

    Get out of my head!!!!!!!

I was just thinking yesterday as I was driving down south why they have braille on drive up ATM's! This came about because I stopped at a rest area and there was a sign on the wall asking not to drop gum, coins, smaill children, etc into the urinals. It was also printed in Braille and I starting thinking....how would a blind person know if the sign was even there. (The sign was up really high on the wall)

    December 23, 2010 at 12:20 pm |
    • Dave the 1st@TWO

Maybe while they are groping around for the urinal, they will accidentally feel the sign??
      (Ha, I said "groping")

      December 23, 2010 at 12:23 pm |
    • The Witty One

Maybe, but typically the groping is done in the stalls :)

Oh, sorry *shrugs sheepishly*. My husband calls it the b!tch blessing and yes it come from my side of the family. My ex sister in law referred to my sisters and I as snooty b!tches... but we were because we hated her. Speaking of Canadians, will yours be making an appearance this holiday season?

        I'd hit it :)

  22. wendy@dave the 1st

    1. some atm's are walkups...and it's easier/cheaper to just make them all w/braille then not. (seriously! – info per Brinks)
    2. cuz the highway is in-ter-state. :)
    3. because the inventor of the english language has a wicked sense of humor...

    December 23, 2010 at 11:47 am |
    • Dave the 1st@MicheleG

      2. The highway is NOT in-TER-state. That means going from one state to another. Those highways are in-TRA-state in Hawaii, They don't go to any other state.
(truth is, they named them that to get federal$$$)

      December 23, 2010 at 11:50 am |

        Ooops! meant @wendy. Sorry Michele!

When a lesbain goes dancing with a transvestite, who gets to lead?
How do blind people know when they are sufficiently clean in the bathroom?
What would you add to instant water?

      December 23, 2010 at 11:28 am |

why do they have braile keypads on drive-up ATMs?
Why do they have interstate highways in Hawaii?
Why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways?

    • RichardHead

Yep-looks like his Grandma locked him in the basement again.

      December 23, 2010 at 9:31 am |
    • Dave the 1st@Truth

How sad, I just looked, and it looks as if the last post OTHER than vapor was on the 19th. Yet, he is still posting there. It must suck to have his life.

      December 23, 2010 at 9:32 am |
      • Truth@Dave1

Agreed...nobody to play with. Reminds me of the kid in grade school who would purposely do gross stuff at lunch to get attention...

Now who's up for some cards?

        December 23, 2010 at 9:38 am |
      • Dave the 1st@Truth

I'll pass today, you cleaned me out yesterday, and I had to explain to the first lady where all my money went.
(She couldn't understand how I ended up on a cruise ship.)

        December 23, 2010 at 9:41 am |
      • RichardHead@Truth

Deal me in. Got my NEW Amex Purple Card yesterday. It's got Barney on it so I got a crap load credit line.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:48 am |
      • Truth@RichHead

rich, the latest on Sunday's matchup is that Tebow is the starter for the remainder of the season. Today's Denver ComPost has a front page story where Kyle Orton is pretty much venting his spleen over it. Heck, the guy is getting $8.1 mill guaranteed. For that much, I would happily sit on the sidelines. In a freakin dress.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:54 am |
      • RichardHead@Truth

I concur. There are so many rumors down here about a house cleaning if the Texans don't win Sunday. On a Brighter note The Cowboys should announce that Garret will remain head coach.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:59 am |
      • Jdizzle Mchammerpants@Truth, Head

They should tell him if he could win more than 3 games and avoid being traded he can start. Until then, he can have a steaming cup of STFU

        December 23, 2010 at 10:11 am |
      • CoachMike@Jdizz

        I guess I should have a cup of that too. :}

        December 23, 2010 at 10:14 am |
      • Alex Smith

        Coming right up, Coach.

        December 23, 2010 at 10:16 am |
    • Snowbunny

Where is Vapor posting now? What an idiot...

      December 23, 2010 at 9:47 am |
      • Dave the 1st@Snowbunny

He's still @ WA3. All by his lonesome...:(

        December 23, 2010 at 9:49 am |
      • Queen of Everything@Snowbunny&Dave

Maybe he's hoping his Dungeons and Dragons buddies will show up...

        December 23, 2010 at 9:52 am |
      • Dave the 1st@Snowbunny

Maybe in the spirit of the Xmas season, we could all go over there and hurl insults at him for a while, that would make his day!!!

        December 23, 2010 at 9:54 am |
      • Dave the 1st@Snowbunny

        Or maybe just hurl....

        December 23, 2010 at 9:55 am |
      • Truth@SnowBunny, Dave, Queen

I think we should fix up vapor and Chef Eyesore, and they can get together and b!tch...

        December 23, 2010 at 9:56 am |
    • Jerv

You know, in a twisted kinda way, I get a kick out of him making a complete azz of himself.

      December 23, 2010 at 9:59 am |
      • Snowbunny@Jerv

HA! me too- that's why I was asking. LMAO
I can't even find that wine room anymore...

        December 23, 2010 at 10:16 am |
      • Dave the 1st@Snowbunny

I have it bookmarked, I check it from time to time to see if he has come completely apart yet. Looks as if he's almost there...Just a little push....

      • Dave the 1st@RH

Yesterday wasn't so bad until that headache showed up. I swear it felt like someone was ringing the bells of St. Petersberg in my head!!!

        December 23, 2010 at 9:29 am |
      • RichardHead@Dave1

I brought in a BIG Bottle of Excedrin just in case. It's on the coffee table.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:33 am |
      • Dave the 1st@RH

Thanks, hopefully won't need it today, nobody wants to refinance two days before Xmas.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:34 am |
    • Queen of Everything@Guinn

I, like Dave, will take a cup sans coffee. I'm in need of a little hair of the dog this morning.

      December 23, 2010 at 9:39 am |
  41. Queen of Everything

I will be enjoying my fruit on the beach if anyone would like to join me.

Was Your Hut to your satisfaction My Queen?

      December 23, 2010 at 9:13 am |
      • Queen of Everything@RH

It was wonderful until some cretin tried to sneak in in the middle of night. I walloped him though, he should be limping for a while.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:33 am |
      • RichardHead@Queen

Yes,Your snoring was the sound of his native love call. BTW-I miss calculated the distance from the ocean to your Hut. Hope High Tide didn't scare you as you were sent out to sea. I must say your Natural Flotation Devices do come in handy at times.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:42 am |
      • Queen of Everything@RH

I have done many things in my sleep but snoring is NOT one of them. And yes, Killy and Evie can be considered lifesaving apparatus.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:46 am |
      • Queen of Everything@RH

Oh and one other thing...I believe I saw on National Geographic that snoring is the mating call of the Texas Horndog.

        December 23, 2010 at 9:48 am |
      • RichardHead@Queen

Yes,We are a Very Rare Species.

  45. Queen of Everything

Good morning sunshines! To answer Jerv's question, since I am already Queen of Everything I would just continue to be my delightfully charming self.
On a completely other topic, 6 months ago today at this very time (8:43 a.m.) I was lying in a hospital bed preparing to deliver my second child. I had been in labor for an hour and a half and my husband and I had placed bets with the nurses and my OB on how much longer it would be. Well, 45 minutes later at 9:27 am my 7lbs 9oz baby boy made his wordly debut. Although he can't read this and none of you know what an absolutely marvelous being he is, I would just like to say HAPPY HALF BIRTHDAY, LOVEBUG! MAMA LOVES YOU!

    December 23, 2010 at 8:50 am |
    • RichardHead@Queen

Happy Birthday to the Lil Queen!

      December 23, 2010 at 8:52 am |
    • Jdizzle Mchammerpants@TRUTH

Close to my daughter's b-day it sounds if my math is correct. She turned 6 (years) on June 21.

      December 23, 2010 at 10:08 am |
      • Jdizzle Mchammerpants

        Oops. NOT @TRUTH.

I'm not talking to smelling pants at the moment. X)

        December 23, 2010 at 8:59 am |

I will, thank you! I have to go home and pack up the boyfriend and the dogs! You may need to be careful at the grocery store-I have a feeling it may a be quite busy.

      • RichardHead@SE

        I have Rudy the Reindeer that AD sent me. He runs over all the Grandma's and clears the aisles for me. :}

        December 23, 2010 at 9:07 am |
  47. Truth@RichHead, Jerv

Good morning guys, great choice on the mroning brew...

If I could choose, perhaps Gandhi...the man brought the British Empire to his terms without firing a shot. Not a bad wway to go about your agenda when you think about it. Other good choices, imho would be Rosa Parks, MLK, or Sean Penn (for his work in Haiti, NOT his politics)

    December 23, 2010 at 8:40 am |
    • RichardHead@Truth

Good Morning my Brother. Excellent choices as well. Please tell me it will be snowing in MHC Sunday. It's the only way I know of to get rid of this Texans coach.

      December 23, 2010 at 8:45 am |
  48. RichardHead@Jerv

Another excellent choice. To be honest I would rather look at you versus Symon or that Putz from yesterday! Hit It-Pee Wee.

    December 23, 2010 at 8:30 am |
    • Queen of Everything@RH

Hey, don't insult my Robbie. It's not his fault he's a great big hunk of deliciousness.

  49. RichardHead

Good Morning All! Our Featured Coffee this morning is a Caribbean Blend with a hint of coconut! Outside The Lounge door you will notice a large water bowl-Please dip your feet in the bowl, towels are hanging nearby. We must not track sand into The Lounge. For all those with slight {or in the case of The Queen}MAJOR Hangovers,A Large bottle of Excedrin is on the coffee table. Now where is Evil Grin-He was bringing breakfast?

    December 23, 2010 at 7:53 am |
  50. Jerv

Morning everyone! If you could be king (or queen) for the day, who would you be?

    December 23, 2010 at 7:44 am |
    • RichardHead

Hmm..Deep question to start the day. Why settle for King-I would be Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus -Roman Emperor of Caligula! Booze,Naked Women and just think about the food along with all the extra curricular activities!

      December 23, 2010 at 8:19 am |
      • Jerv@RicH

Morning RicH and great choice. I'd want to be a featured chef on 5@5 so I would know what it's like to be "hit" by the Coffee klatsch. (Peewee, bad boy, go to your room!)

        December 23, 2010 at 8:26 am |
    • Evil Grin

Fools! An evil overlord would never stoop to being a mere king for a day!
