Every so often, we're highlighting a local or regional blogger we think you ought to know about. We can’t be everywhere at once, so we look to these passionate eaters, cooks and writers to keep us tapped into every facet of the food world. Consider this a way to get to know a blog’s taste buds, because, well, you should. Who: Cheryl Sternman Rule, of 5 Second Rule I’ve got a background in print media, and freelanced for a number of well-known magazines (EatingWell, Body + Soul, Vegetarian Times, Sunset) as a food and nutrition writer before starting 5 Second Rule back in 2008. Since then, my attention has swiveled towards cultivating my own audience, and my readers - props to them all - have inspired me to dig deep and develop my true, authentic writing voice. Much to the surprise of those who know me, my blogging voice is far snappier than my actual human voice, which sounds a bit like Kermit the Frog’s. 5 Second Rule presents a smorgasbord of content for the curious food lover. In addition to being a professional writer, I’m also a recipe developer, so I’ve got plenty of original recipes up on the site. (I’m also currently writing a cookbook, which will be published by Running Press in 2012.) But I don’t think of 5 Second Rule as primarily a recipe site - I view it as a springboard for discussions about thought-provoking trends and controversies in the food world; as a source for inspiration and decent writing; and as a place to play, entertain and be entertained in return. The ability to share my food photos is the cherry on the mint-chip (please) sundae. I have a tendency to drink a big mug of black tea before I write, and I’m never quite sure whether it’s a good or a bad sign that my most popular pieces are those I wrote when under caffeine’s evil grip. Whether I’m feeling sad for quinoa that no one wants to play with it on the playground, making fun of ridiculous candy, refusing to write about the French Laundry, or mulling my identity crisis through the lens of a chicken, I guess my blog is a bit of a live wire: you never know what kind of jolt you’ll get when you click over, but hopefully, in the end, it will make you feel more awake. Kermit the Frog here, signing off. Do you read a local blog that you'd like to see featured? Send 'em our way for a chance in the spotlight. |

Here's a foodie blog that'll get you drooling: http://www.foodgal.com. She's a gal and a professional food writer who's a James Beard Award winner; last year, the national food journalists association named hers the best food blog in the US. Foodgal has ins to chefs, restaurants and other food sources like no one else has, so she gets great interviews and is on top of new products, gadgets, methods and recipes. Just be careful reading Foodgal while you're hungry.
I DOSED OFF READING THIS, WHAT WAS THE STORY ABOUT AHH NEVER MIND?
You mentioned to send other local blogs your way to possibly get featured, so I suggest taking a look at a blog of a friend of mine in NYC. It's half NYC foodie blog/half private dinner blog. It's called 8Ate@Eight (8 people Ate dinner @ Eight o'clock) – http://8ateateight.com/
Love that they feature you here Cheryl. Your blog is amazing & the conversation & the ideas you stir up are always a great read.
The Office is a very liberal show, whose sole purpose is to demoralize the American Worker into a mindset of lower expectations. The less we expect, the less we will protest as we are further descended into the class of wage slaves. Typical from the far left party of hate.
You like it, admit it.
I LOVE this blog–so glad you featured it! It's just the right balance of recipes, stories, and absolutely gorgeous photos. I can't wait for her book to come out.
Ever see that episode of The Office where Kevin brings in the chili to work and dumps it all over the floor? Then scoops it back into the pot in panic? Good stuff.
YES! I felt so bad for kevin. He usually does nothing redeeming and I thought it was so nice he brought it chili for everyone. Poor kevin.
